Chapter 144 He Had No Right to Ask
George looked over at Shane, who was sitting in the yard, focused on shaping a clay pot like nothing was wrong. “What are they talking about?” he asked.
Shane lifted his chin. His face had a smug look George had never seen before.
They’d known each other a long time. Even before they’d officially met, George knew this guy didn’t care about much-very few things ever really mattered to him.
Besides his mech designs, nothing seemed to hold his interest or make him feel anything real.
He’d won countless awards, been personally honored by the imperial family. Praise, glory-he had it all
But George had never seen Shane this smug. Not once.
A weird sinking feeling hit him. He finally figured out what was going on. He took off running toward the stone shelter.
Shane didn’t stop him-he just called out, “Be gentle. Don’t scare Layla.”
George didn’t care anymore, but he still softened his steps without thinking, thanks to Shane’s words.
He pushed open the stone shelter door. The main room was empty. He walked around and headed straight for the kitchen.
Layla was cutting up the wild boar.
On his first morning visit, he saw Liam carrying a huge wild boar.
So he brought it to her. Why not to Stella?
Oh, right. Stella doesn’t do manual labor. If Stella got a whole boar, most of it would just rot and attract bugs. Might as well give it to Layla to handle. But… is that really all it is?
Seeing George stop in the doorway, Layla looked up. Gone was her usual sharpness. Her voice was soft and clear. “What’s up?”
But George’s eyes were locked on Layla’s neck. The messy array of red marks told him exactly what Avery and the others had been hinting at.
He finally understood what Shane was so smug about.
So…
They’ve already gotten that far?
Then what about me…
“George!” Layla’s voice, suddenly sharp, snapped him out of it.
“Huh? What?”

Chapter 144 He Had No Right to Ask
“I asked what’s up with you?” Layla shot back, a bit annoyed. “You come in here and just space out?”
George’s gaze flickered between her face and her neck. He opened his mouth, but the question wouldn’t
come.
He had no right, no proper standing to ask. No matter how much it hurt, he had to accept it. It was a fact now. Even if he hated it, he couldn’t change it.
“Got anything to eat? I’m hungry,” George asked instead.
Layla pointed to the shelves behind her. “Figured you couldn’t think of anything but food. Help yourself
George turned and walked toward the shelves. His foot caught on a piece of firewood, and he stumbled
“Careful,” Layla said. “If you mess up that pretty face in my house, your fans will come for me.”
[Layla, please stop talking.]
[Look at him. He’s falling apart!]
[Oh my god, this is so sad.]
[He just realized he likes Layla, and now she and Prof. Slater are a thing.]
[What’s the big deal? Weren’t they all supposed to be Layla’s mates anyway? They can share.]
[What do you mean by “Layla’s mates”? They’re Stella’s mates! Layla has no shame, doing this on the show. Instead of calling her out, you’re all praising her? Do you have any morals?]
[I think it’s a bit shameless too. Everyone knows they’re together, but this is just…]
[Everyone knows your parents are together too. They’re adults. Who doesn’t know about sex? You’re the one with the dirty mind, coming here looking for a fight.]
[Well said!]
[I think they have a point. It’s still a show. Shouldn’t they be a little more discreet?]
[If you don’t like it, don’t watch. I’m here for the steamy stuff!]
[If you like porn, go watch porn!]
[If you like clean shows, go watch the news!]
[Guys, stop fighting. Is no one worried about George? He’s really falling apart. He’s so big, but he’s all hunched over. It’s kind of pitiful. I feel bad for him.]
Layla didn’t get the snappy comeback she expected from George. She looked back to see him crouched in front of the shelves.
