Chapter 146 What if It’s Real?
Losing the bet wouldn’t cost her much. Liam was the one who hunted the boar. Even without a bet, if he wanted to eat a bit more, who could really say anything about it?
“Seriously though, why do you think he won’t come back?” Liam asked, adding two more sticks to the fire. He got up and walked to the shelves to look for something to eat.
“Hey! Who’s been taking your jerky? There’s a lot missing.”
Liam would swing by Layla’s place just for a snack on his way. Aside from the people in her cabin, he was the one who knew exactly how much food she had stored.
“It’s gone,” Layla said casually.
“Gone?!” The jerky in Liam’s mouth nearly fell out. “When… Yesterday? When we were being chased by the Quetzalcoatlus?”
Layla nodded. “What other time could it be?”
“Damn it!” Liam couldn’t help cursing. “What kind of asshole does that?!”
[Okay, but General Hartwell, could you tone it down a little?]
[He is toned down. You haven’t seen how he curses at us during training.]
[How does he curse? I’m curious.]
[He
says
we’d stand straighter with a dick on our foreheads.]
[The point is valid, but the wording is… creative.]
[I can’t tell if that’s a compliment or an insult.]
[He’s got that boyish face, looks all cute. Who knew he had a mouth like that?]
[Wait, I’m not having this! I’m protesting for George! Who was it that said our George has a sharp tongue? General Hartwell’s is way sharper!]
[But they’re in different circles. Everyone in General Hartwell’s circle talks like that. It makes him seem almost wholesome by comparison.]
Liam chewed on two pieces of jerky, trying to calm down. It didn’t work. He was still angry. So angry that he grabbed a third piece, his cheeks puffing out as he chewed,
[Did he just come here to freeload?]
[I’m serious, when are the show’s replacement Vanguards getting here? I’m waiting to solve this case.]
[It’ll be a while, right? They said it would take a few days.]
“If you’re bored, maybe you should leave,” Layla suggested.

Chapter 146 What if It’s Real?
Having him there eating was getting on her nerves. There wasn’t much left to begin with, and with Lan munching away, there was even less.
More importantly, after the beast tide, the prey in the mountains had migrated. Game was hard to find now. The little food Layla had left might not even be enough to get them through the winter, and here Liam was. eating it.
“I’m not bored,” Liam said, grabbing another handful of jerky from the bag. “How’s that charcoal burning coming along?”
They’d thought that after running for their lives, the charcoal would be ruined. But when they got back yesterday, they realized the timing had been just right.
Liam had even teased Layla about it, saying it would take a few hours when it actually took nearly a day. If he’d really waited, he’d have been guarding it for almost twenty-four hours straight.
“It won’t be ready until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest. You’ll come then, right?”
“Come for what?” Liam asked.
Layla was busy cutting the fat off the meat to render into lard. Hearing his question, her eyes lit up with an idea. “Tonight, I’ll go to the show’s trading post and get some flour. Tomorrow, we’ll make ravioli.”
“Make what?” Liam had never heard of that food. He looked at Layla, confused, with a hint of curiosity if you looked closely.
“Ravioli. It’s a type of food-dough wrapped around a filling, then boiled or steamed.”
“Will it taste good?”
“Fine, don’t eat it then.”
“I’ll eat it! I’ll eat it!”
He’d pretty much figured it out by now. If Shane, the main guy on the mission, wasn’t in a hurry, what was the point of him stressing? He might as well eat, drink, and at least enjoy himself.
As for whether the higher-ups were in a hurry… he had a feeling they weren’t.
Otherwise, they wouldn’t have left him and Shane to nearly die without sending help. Or maybe, the higher-ups weren’t in a hurry because they didn’t need to be.
They had him figured out. They knew he’d do anything to find the Starcore Ore. He wanted to restore the Hartwell Legion’s glory; he wanted to get back to the front lines.
Finding the Starcore Ore was his only chance. It was like the carrot dangling in front of the donkey. He
knew he might never reach it, might die of exhaustion before he got a taste, and even if he did succeed, he might not get to keep much for himself. But he still wanted to try.
What if…
What if it’s real?
