Chapter 148 Looks Like I Won the Bet

Liam started off, “Stella and I aren’t-”

“Oh?” Shane cut him off, raising an eyebrow. “Weren’t you two engaged? I could’ve sworn there was an engagement.”

“It was just a verbal deal,” Liam said.

He wasn’t even sure why he was bringing it up. But seeing Shane’s smug face made him want to get under

his skin.

Shane said, “Stella and I never even had that much, and Layla still wanted nothing to do with me at first.

He wanted Liam to know Layla hated everything and everyone tied to Stella. After the Quetzalcoatlus incident, that feeling had only gotten stronger.

The whole thing with Layla’s dress ending up in the creature’s nest had been dropped quietly, like an unspoken agreement.

But everyone who knew the history between Layla and the Grant family knew they were behind it. The Grants had tried to kill her.

Layla probably hated them more than anything now and wanted to stay as far as possible from anyone linked to them.

Liam retorted, “But we’ve been through life and death together.”

Shane said calmly, “Last night, she promised me she wouldn’t catch feelings for George.”

Liam pressed his lips together, ready to argue. But when he looked up, he met Shane’s mocking stare.

It hit him then. If Shane was wary of George, he was definitely wary of him too. If Layla had promised not to like George, she’d probably promised the same about him.

There was no point in embarrassing himself more.

He looked over at Blaze, who was still mixing mud for bricks. “How much longer?”

“We’ll be lucky to finish by tonight. This stuff takes time-it needs to dry too.”

“Then we’ll just keep going tomorrow. Don’t push yourself too hard.”

Working tomorrow gave him an excuse to come back. But why did he even want to come back? He didn’t want to think about it too hard.

Liam shook his head and dropped the subject.

“Where’s Yates?” Liam asked, scanning the yard. He’d just realized he hadn’t seen the kid since he got here.

“He said he was gonna look around, see if he could find any useful herbs before the snow hits.”

Liam grunted noncommittally and stood up. “It’s almost time to eat. Doesn’t the kid know to come home?

Shane shook his head. Liam had always been a pragmatist. Just like how he’d never really cared about Stella. but to save the Hartwell Legion, he’d gone to her and played the part of a lovesick fool to lock in a marriage alliance.

The truth was, the Grant family had seen better days. Back in their prime, the Grants and Slaters had been close.

The Slaters handled mech design, the Grants did mech manufacturing. Their partnership went all the way back to Layla’s great-grandmother’s time-nearly two hundred years of working together.

But in the last few decades, the Grant family had run into internal trouble. Their power and influence had dropped sharply.

They still worked with the Slaters, but their production facilities couldn’t handle the biggest mech orders

anymore.

The Grants were fading—a dying giant, barely keeping up the act of their former glory.

If the Grant family were still as powerful as they were in Layla’s grandmother’s day, a figurehead general like Liam, with no real power, would’ve had a way harder time arranging that marriage alliance.

Sebastian and Felix came back with a load of dry grass. Seeing there was still some daylight, they were about to head out for another load.

Then Layla heard commotion from the kitchen and hurried outside to stop them. “Don’t leave yet,” she said. “We’ll eat once everyone is back.”

Hearing that, Sebastian and Felix didn’t argue. They washed their hands in the yard and went to help by the gate, making more mud bricks.

A little later, the guys from Emily’s cabin came back with more dirt.

Liam returned with Yates, carrying a big basket stuffed with wild greens. Yates held a small bunch of some plant he seemed to value a lot.

That was everyone.

Liam went inside and looked around. Not seeing George, he was surprised.
