Chapter 152 Only Like You

Between George and Shane, Shane was the one who mattered more. Obviously.

How could she possibly give up being with Shane for George?

Somehow, Shane seemed to have gotten a whole lot sharper. He read her mind almost instantly.

While everyone’s attention was fixed on Caleb and Hanna, and George was tangled up with Stella, Share” dipped his head and pressed a kiss to Layla’s eye, catching the tear that was about to fall.

“You have to like me best.”

That light-hearted phrase echoed in Layla’s ears, gentle yet possessive, bringing her an unexpected sense of

comfort.

“I only like you,” she said, standing on tiptoe to plant a quick kiss on the corner of Shane’s mouth.

Yesterday, Shane kissed Layla many times without her consent.

But none of them had ever made his heart feel like it no longer belonged to him.

She said she only liked him.

His Layla said she only liked him.

His heart hammered. A kind of tender warmth crept into the serpent’s usually cold gaze.

But something was off.

Shane studied Layla, tilting his head down to catch every flicker of expression on her face.

In her eyes, there was a tangle of conflict, unease, and a trace of loss.

Her “only you” didn’t seem to come entirely from the heart.

“Why?” he asked. “Don’t you like George?”

Layla’s eyes flickered. She shook her head. “I can’t like him.”

Shane’s heart jolted.

It wasn’t just that she didn’t like George. It was that she couldn’t.

“Why can’t you like him?” Shane pressed.

He didn’t want Layla to like George. He wanted her to like him alone.

The distinction between “not liking” and “not being able to like” was crucial.

“Because he’s Stella’s fiancé.” Layla forced a smile.

But inside, she felt heavy.

Shane felt his own heart sink a little in response.

He was Stella’s fiancé.

Layla had used that same excuse to reject Shane countless times.

To her, being Stella’s fiance was a death sentence.

Layla shook her head, trying to cast the thought aside.

She turned to look at Hanna and Caleb.

“Did Hanna say why George attacked Caleb?”

“She did. George saw Caleb with her and acted impulsively to protect her.”

Relief washed over Layla.

With Vanguard recording everything, even if Caleb tried to press charges later, he wouldn’t have a legal leg to stand on.

“Then why did Caleb go after Hanna?”

“That, I don’t know. Hanna wouldn’t say. Blaze asked her over and over. She refused to explain.”

Shane, truth be told, wasn’t someone who understood emotions easily. He operated on instinct. He liked Layla, so he wanted to be with her.

He really liked her, so he wanted her all to himself.

He really, really liked her, so he couldn’t bear to see her sad. If she liked George, he could accept that.

But even someone as emotionally clueless as him could see that Blaze had feelings for Hanna.

And Blaze was, by every conceivable measure, a far better man than Caleb.

He couldn’t figure out what on earth had gotten into Hanna’s head to make her fall for Caleb and give up on Blaze.

Maybe a fox’s way of thinking was just different from a snake’s.

“Smack!”

The sharp crack of a slap cut through his and Layla’s conversation. Every head turned toward Caleb and Hanna.

Hanna’s hand flew to her cheek, her pinned-up hair slipping loose. She stared at Caleb in disbelief.

Through her hand, the red, swollen mark of the slap was clearly visible on her cheek.

Layla rushed over without a second thought, kicked Caleb aside, and pulled Hanna toward Blaze, who was charging toward them.
