Chapter 155 The Truth About the Theft
And yet, when they were building the stone houses, Hanna had gone out of her way to bring her bundles of lanypgrass and glowgrass for light.
Hanna had a kind heart.
Her past had just been brutally cruel.
From what Caleb had just spewed, Layla could piece together the first half of Hanna’s life.
She was abandoned by her parents, lured away by Caleb with just a piece of bread, and she had stayed with him ever since.
She’d never known love, not from anyone, except from him. So even if what he gave her wasn’t really love. she still couldn’t tear herself away.
“I’m sorry. We stole your things.” Hanna clung to Layla’s arm, crying so hard she could barely get the words out. Her voice shuddered.
Layla froze, looking down at her.
Hanna kept her head down, unable to meet her gaze.
“Was it you or him?” Layla asked.
Hanna just shook her head and said nothing.
Seeing her reaction, Layla grew angry. “Are you still covering for him?”
“No, I’m not… I…” Hanna shook her head, looking up at Layla with red eyes. “I didn’t know how to explain.”
“Then take your time.”
“Let’s go back first.” Shane was looking at Layla’s feet.
She was still barefoot, standing on the sand, holding Hanna.
Shane was worried the sand might hurt her feet.
But her shoes were still soaked. Putting them back on would just make her colder.
“Let’s head back first.” Shane tugged at Layla’s sleeve, and before she could reply, he scooped her straight up into his arms.
Nobody had wanted anything more to do with Caleb, but the moment Hanna said they had stolen from Layla, several people promptly grabbed the still-disoriented Caleb and hauled him along.
Stella glanced at Liam and George before walking to George’s side.
George didn’t notice her at all. His eyes were fixed on Layla.
He wanted to talk to her, but she was cradled in Shane’s arms.

It burned him up inside just looking at it. Eventually, he sidled over to Liam and grudgingly asked. What did they steal from her?”
“Food.” Liam glanced over his shoulder at Caleb, who was still cursing as Blaze dragged him along.
“Food?” George whipped his head around and glared daggers at Caleb.
Layla treasured every morsel of her food. Anytime George so much as took an extra bite, shed glare ahim And this bastard had stolen from her. Caleb deserved to die.
A sharp pang of regret hit him. He should have let Caleb stew in the water a while longer.
[Oh my god, I can’t believe it was them who stole the food.]
[I always suspected it was them. Who else would pull such a lowdown, dirty thing?]
[It wasn’t them! People who don’t know the story need to stop talking nonsense. Caleb did it alone. Hanna knew nothing!]
[Oh, so you say she didn’t know? Hanna herself just said, “We stole your things.” I heard it with my own ears!]
[She really didn’t know! I don’t know why she said “we,” but she only just found out! That’s why Caleb hit her!]
By this time, the group had reached Layla’s cabin.
The courtyard was still half-open, but the shattered clay bricks had been cleared away. A neat stack of fresh, nearly dry adobe bricks sat outside the yard wall.
In another couple of days, the enclosure would be rebuilt.
“Let’s talk inside. It’s chilly out here.”
The gentle sound of Layla’s voice made tears spill down Hanna’s cheeks all over again. She raised her red eyes to look at Layla.
Layla shifted, feeling a bit self-conscious under her gaze. After all, she was currently cradled in Shane’s arms, clutching her shoes and his jacket. She looked, frankly, a mess.
Today, Yates had been left at home by Shane to watch over the place.
After all, they’d already been robbed once. If they all went out and it happened again, Layla would be heartbroken.
