Chapter 157 A Different Path

“If not for him, you would have been taken in by foster care. The Empire’s welfare system would have fed you, educated you, without you having to sell yourself. All you’d have to do is work for them as an adult.”

Liam’s voice cut Hanna off.

She looked up at him, stunned.

She had never considered that if she hadn’t met Caleb, there might have been another path for her.

Caleb told her no one wanted her, that only he would take her in, only he didn’t look down on her.

Caleb said she had nowhere else to go, that her very survival was his doing.

Caleb also said he saved her, worked so hard to earn money for her, even gave up his own chance to study so she could go to school, all so she would succeed and make those who once looked down on her regret it.

Two thousand star coins weren’t much, but they could last her a month if budgeted carefully.

Hanna whipped her head toward Caleb.

Caleb went to the government service hall once a month.

He said it was for business, so she never asked.

Now she realized. “Did you take it?”

Caleb hadn’t expected to be exposed at a time like this.

His guilt lasted only a second. Then he straightened his back and lifted his chin. “So what if I did? I raised you. That money was supposed to be mine!”

“You raised me?” Hanna’s voice shook. “I was six when I went with you. All these years, I washed your clothes and shoes, and I cleaned the house. I never bought a single piece of clothing. I wore the clothes you picked up from others. I drank the cheapest brand of nutrient solution. And you say you raised me?”
