Chapter 168 Digging In for Winter

Layla was surprised. “Huh? How did you know?”

“Blaze likes Hanna. Everyone’s noticed.”

“I meant, how did you know Blaze would get to stay with Hanna?”

“I overheard General Hartwell and Avery coaching him. Told him to play pitiful. Said Hanna’s soft-hearted If he just acted pitiful enough, she’d definitely let him stay. Forget the rest for now. The key is to get a foot in the door. Close proximity, early advantage.”

Can’t Liam and Avery teach him something decent?

[Well, now I know how Blaze suddenly grew a brain and sprouted romantic instincts. He found himself some experts.]

[He’s a fast learner, then. Applied it perfectly.]

[All that aside, where did our George go wrong? Why didn’t he consult George?]

[Let’s not bring George into this. He can’t even sort out his own mess. Got into a fight and stormed out of Stella’s tent. Now he’s homeless. He’s a walking punchline.]

[Don’t call George a punchline! George just doesn’t know how to express himself. But he hangs on Stella’s every word!]

Layla sat down next to Shane and leaned over to look at his drawing. She couldn’t quite make it out. “What are you drawing?”

“Seren wants to dig an underground cave to hide out with Avery this winter, so he asked me to draw up a blueprint.”

“Why underground? Can’t they just build a house?”

Her question made the other two people in the room freeze.

All three looked at each other.

Finally, Yates broke the silence. “Yeah, why live underground?”

Shane tightened his grip on his pen. After a moment, he set it down. “I’ll ask him tomorrow.”

[Could it be because cicadas prefer sleeping underground? Some primal instinct in their blood?]

[But he’s a cicada beastkin, not an actual cicada. Why would he prefer sleeping underground?]

[He probably never considered sleeping above ground.]

[Isn’t digging a burrow way harder than building a house?]

Shane put down his pen. He didn’t even bother tidying up the paper. He drew a deep breath, took Layla’s hand, and stood.

A moment ago, he’d been about to ask her what she thought of his blueprint, whether it was detailed enough.

But now, time for bed!

At the doorway, Layla called out a goodnight to Yates. “Get some rest, Yates. You can finish all this

tomorrow.”

It was a bit messy, but it felt lived-in. Full of life’s little signs.

Yates watched the two of them disappear into the main room but didn’t go to rest himself.

He was still wide awake. He tidied up the main room, putting everything in its place, and put out the stoves.

Still not sleepy, he wandered over to where Shane had been sitting and looked down at the discarded blueprint.

Earlier, he’d assumed Shane was sketching some kind of mecha, so he’d deliberately steered the Vanguard

away.

Now that he knew it was just a design for Seren’s underground burrow, and likely a scrapped one at that, he could look with a clear conscience.

He sat there studying it for a long while. He couldn’t make sense of it at all.

He shook his head. “As expected of Prof. Slater.

“No wonder people say lectures are the best cure for insomnia. I sat here staring at his blueprint for just a few minutes and I’m already sleepy.”

[Yates has finally experienced what we go through in class.]

[Can’t understand a thing. Drowsy as hell. But faced with Prof. Slater’s cold stare, you don’t dare actually fall asleep. Every lecture, I pinch my thighs black and blue.]

The next morning, Layla wasn’t awake yet, and Shane hadn’t risen either, but Seren had already arrived.

Thanks to Yates, this place was tidy.

Layla had said yesterday that the charcoal kiln should be ready to open today.

Yates had been up early to crack it open.

He was covered head to toe in soot.

It wasn’t long before Seren showed up.

Then there were two people working, both covered head to toe in soot.

“So this is charcoal?” Seren marveled. “Layla is seriously amazing. She can make anything.”

The charcoal was black as night, still carrying residual warmth.
