Chapter 169 The Underground Burrow Misunderstanding
To survive the winter.” He said it as if it were the most obvious thing in the world
To survive the winter, why does it have to be underground? Can’t you build a house above ground Layla didn’t understand, and she couldn’t pretend to respect the idea either.
In her view, things that lived underground were creatures that shunned the light.
Seren’s eyes flew wide. “You can build houses above ground?”
Layla asked, “When you were on Planet Central, didn’t you live in a house?”
“Yes,” Seren nodded, then realized what Layla was misunderstanding and hurried to explain. I meant, you know how to build houses?”
Layla was speechless.
So it wasn’t that he’d never considered living above ground. He just didn’t know how.
Cicadas couldn’t survive the winter themselves, but they laid their eggs deep in the soil to await the return of spring.
Beastkin, to varying degrees, retained some of the primal instincts of their animal counterparts.
When he’d needed a shelter, his instinct had screamed: underground burrow.
Of course, the idea of sleeping in a house had crossed his mind, but he’d dismissed it instantly. Building a house seemed impossibly complicated. He’d never done it before. He shouldn’t overreach.
When Shane and Yates heard he wanted an underground burrow, neither of them guessed it was because he couldn’t build a house.
They both assumed it was a cicada beastkin and a butterfly beastkin instinct.
Through a cascade of misunderstandings, they’d nearly ended up constructing an entire underground lam
Fortunately, Layla wasn’t yet fully versed in all the various beastkin quirks. She’d simply asked a question, and the whole mix-up was laid bare.
Facing Seren’s hopeful, admiring gaze, Layla nodded, a little awkwardly. “Did you not see my trechouse?
She could build a treehouse. A regular house was nothing.
Seren looked up at the two treehouses mounted in the trees. He’d noticed them a while ago. He’d envied them, honestly. But treehouses weren’t warm in winter.
“That’s different. You guys live in a stone house yourselves.”
Layla herself lived in a stone house. It had never occurred to him that she also knew how to build other kinds.
“Using local materials. Stone houses are sturdier than wood and hold heat better.”

At her words, Seren realized just how profoundly stupid he’d been
He smacked himself on the head, leaving a handprint of charcoal dust
“Ugh… Im an idiot.”
Then a thought struck. “Hey, isn’t there a cave near your place? We’ll move in there
“Afraid you’re a little late.” Layla said.
Yates looked at him sympathetically. “Blaze and Hanna moved in last night.”
“What? Last night? Blaze moves that fast?”
Yates nodded emphatically. “Yeah.”
“General Hartwell and Avery taught him well,” Blaze announced, striding in from outside. He greeted Laya. then picked up a tool and got straight to work.
Hearing that Avery was mixed up in this made Seren’s temper prickle. Here he was, trying everything to improve their living situation, and Avery was sabotaging him.
“Don’t lose hope, Seren,” Blaze said. “If you go a little further north, there’s another cave. Smaller, but enough for two.”
Blaze nodded in firm agreement. “Right. Small is warm. You two grew up sharing everything. Living together’s no big deal.”
Seren didn’t actually see anything wrong with them staying together.
“You don’t understand. Avery is particular. If the place isn’t nice, he gets unhappy.”
“Then fix it up pretty,” Layla said, sitting in the yard and trimming vegetables. She looked up at Blaze You just moved. Shouldn’t you be at home setting up? Why’d you come over here?”
Blaze shook his head. “Hanna sent me. She said there wasn’t much to tidy, she could handle it alone. I was also thinking, once you guys are done here, think you could help us build a heated bed platform, too?
“No problem.” Layla smiled and nodded.
From the side, Seren’s hand shot up. “Me, too! Me, too! I want one, too.”
“Alright. We’ll do them all at once. More hands, faster work,”
Just as they were talking, the phone mounted on Yates’s Vanguard rang.
“Answer,” Yates commanded via voice control.
A moment after it connected, Liam’s voice came through. “Is Shane there?”
“He’s here. I’ll take you to him.”
Liam calling Shane meant official business. Layla picked up the Vanguard and headed toward the stone
