Chapter 173 Under the Influence

“That’s true.” If Liam could wipe out Ciara and her family, Layla wouldn’t go mad. She’d probably send him a banner of gratitude.

There were no Vanguards here and no outsiders. She had no reason to hide it.

“What exactly do you mean by ‘going berserk?” Shane steered the conversation back on track.

“I mean losing their minds. The unnatural kind. Losing all sanity.” Liam’s expression turned grave as he got to the point.

“Even beasts, lacking intelligence, aren’t devoid of awareness. They should feel fear. When I killed one or two, they weren’t afraid. Even after killing ten, they showed no fear, and the last two charged at me. Is that normal?”

He bent over the great water buffalo, dissecting as he went. But even after pulling out every organ, gut and all, he found nothing unusual.

“Could it be radiation?” Layla asked suddenly.

Liam froze.

Shane shook his head. “No.” He raised his left wrist, showing Layla the band on it. “No reaction.”

His wristband was specialized lab equipment. It was highly sensitive to radiation and radioactive elements. If any were present, it would have detected them.

No reaction meant those weren’t the cause.

“Besides,” Shane looked up at Liam, “were you in your right mind at the time?”

“Me?” Liam pointed at himself with his blood-soaked hand. In his current state, “right mind” didn’t exactly seem applicable.

Layla turned toward him. “Good point. You said the buffalo felt no fear. But when a normal person sees ten water buffalo charging at them, their first instinct isn’t to fight. It’s to run. Why did you stand your ground?”

Liam paused, taken aback. “Now that you mention it, why did I?”

“When I found you, your eyes were blood-red. I thought you’d just gone berserk from the kill.”

Now it seemed he might have been affected too. Shane remembered Liam’s state when he arrived, eyes blazing red, killing intent still radiating, taking a long moment to recognize him.

It had probably taken him that long to confirm Shane wasn’t a threat.

“I… when you put it like that, I’m starting to feel a little uneasy.” Liam felt a fog rolling through his mind.

He was not an irrational person. In fact, he considered himself more rational, more calculating than

anyone.

Looking back now, if he’d been in his right mind, there was absolutely no world in which he’d face down ten

water buffalo head-on.

He couldn’t die. If he died, the other Empire generals would throw a party.

If he died, the Hartwell Legion would truly lose any hope of restoration.

Ever since his father fell in battle, he’d known he couldn’t die. He had to survive. Even if it meant enduring humiliation in the Empire, even if everyone looked down on him.

As long as he was alive, the Hartwell family still had someone. The Hartwell Legion still had a successor. I wouldn’t dissolve.

If he died, the hereditary general’s medal would be reclaimed by the Empire. The Hartwell name would be extinguished.

Someone as rational as he would never do something so reckless.

“But, there shouldn’t be much that can affect Liam,” Layla said, raising an eyebrow.

The book hadn’t described Liam in much depth. His general’s title had mostly served as a romanticized se piece, a way to highlight the heroine Stella’s charm.

But over this time, Layla had pieced together bits of his background. She’d realized he was far from the glittering, untouchable figure the book portrayed.

Liam trained relentlessly. The book had mentioned his iron will, demonstrated by the fact that the villainous supporting female, the former Layla, had once drugged him.

The drug was supposedly potent enough that even an elephant would need to mate to resolve it.

But Liam endured it. He never laid a finger on former Layla.

He was that resolute.

With such willpower, there was no way he could be easily swayed.

Liam sank into thought.

Just then, Yates came out of the house to collect the butchered beef for washing and slicing into jerky strips.

As he passed Liam, he wrinkled his nose. “General Hartwell, you smell.”

Liam frowned. “Kid, do you have any idea how to talk to people? I’m covered in blood. Of course I smell!”
