Chapter 174 The Scent of Betrayal
Layla caught the fleeting expression on his face but couldn’t read it. There was something almost tragically beautiful about it.
But when she looked again, it was gone.
“Where did you get it on you?” Yates frowned. “I’ve checked all around this area. I’ve never seen Dreamgrass anywhere near here.”
Liam shook his head. He didn’t explain.
Layla could more or less read the situation. Facing Yates’s question, she smiled and deflected. “Who knows?/ He’s always running around.”
“But the smell is so strong. Did you bathe in the stuff? Or did you ingest it? It’s coming from the inside out.” Yates didn’t quite understand and looked thoroughly shocked.
“He’s a deer. It’s normal for him to eat some grass,” Layla patted Liam’s shoulder, covering for him. “Next time, don’t go eating random things.”
“If you gave me a little more food, would I have to go out eating grass?”
“Next time, I’ll give you more.”
Yates didn’t press further. He picked up the basin of butchered meat Liam had finished and headed back inside.
Shane looked at Liam, his expression complicated. “Even now, you still think you were right?”
“How am I not right? Their wrongs are not my wrongs. I have my reasons to persevere.”
His reason had never been the regard of the Empire’s elite. It was the Hartwell Legion. The honor his family had earned, generation after generation, was paid for in blood.
“Every member of the Hartwell family is a loyal martyr.” He turned to look at Shane, but his eyes were red.
Layla pressed a hand to Liam’s wrist. “Go change your clothes first.”
She still didn’t know where the herb had come from, but she could see its effects on Liam still ran deep.
He was barely holding himself together, volatile as a lit fuse.
At Layla’s reminder, Liam realized he was teetering on the edge of losing control again.
He shot Layla a look of lingering fear.
Layla pointed toward the stone house behind them. “Go wash up inside. Shane and I will handle things here.”
As Layla and Shane were dealing with the remaining buffalo, Blaze and Hanna returned.
Hanna’s face broke into a smile the moment she saw Layla. “Layla.”

a The Serut of Betrayal
You’re finally here. Yates is overwhelmed. He kept asking for your help.
“I’ll go right now.” Hanna picked up a basin of butchered beef from the table and headed inside
Blaze glanced at Layla and Shane. “Where’s General Hartwell? Wasn’t he handling this earlier?”
“He went to shower,” Layla replied casually. “Yates mentioned his smell was hurting his pride.
Blaze froze, struggling to keep from laughing out loud.
But in the end, he couldn’t hold it in and burst out laughing.
But the very next second, he froze in embarrassment.
Blaze had barely laughed when Liam stalked out of the house, face thunderous.
“Laughing? Never seen blood before?” He knew Layla had covered for him just now.
Otherwise, Blaze wouldn’t be laughing about him smelling, but worrying about whether he’d been ambushed.
Though he had been ambushed this time.
“Something this big happens to you, and your Stella hasn’t even come to check on you. Does that seem right?”
At Blaze’s sarcastic jab, Liam gave a cold snort. “Spare me your snark. Hanna still hasn’t agreed to be with you yet. Don’t think moving into her tent means you’ve got it made.”
“I don’t think I’ve got it made. But Hanna cares about me. Just now, when I went back, she asked if I was tired. Does General Hartwell have anyone who cares about him?”
Listening from the side, Layla interjected, “He does. Didn’t Yates just show concern about him smelling?”
“Shane!” Liam barked out, his voice sharp. “Are you making fun of me too?”
“Not really making fun. Just stating facts.”
Liam shot over to Shane and snagged him in one swift motion, dragging him away.
“Hey!” Layla set down her knife, ready to go after them.
“Stay right there!” Liam jabbed a finger back at her. “Don’t come over here! This is a battle between males!”
Layla still wanted to follow, but Shane shot her a look.
She understood immediately. These two weren’t going to fight. They probably had something to discuss.
