Chapter 179 Envying From Afar
At the production team’s camp, Michael emerged from the public opinion monitoring department and plopped down miserably across from Fiona, chin propped in both hands. “Do you think what they make actually tastes good?”
“Not a chance!” Fiona replied, focused on her screen, her voice firm before she swallowed.
“Really?” Michael seemed skeptical.
Fiona didn’t believe herself either. But she said it with righteous conviction. “Really. It’s nothing fancy. How good could it possibly taste? The smells the Vanguard captures have distortions. Everything they make stinks!”
Michael still didn’t quite believe it. But there was no alternative. He couldn’t get any in his mouth.
So he had to deceive himself. “Their stuff stinks, it stinks, it stinks… but even stinky food can be delicious.
“Just hold out a little longer. Only a month and a half left. Once the show ends and we’re off this barren rock, I’ll treat you to a good meal.”
Michael’s eyes lit up. “You really mean it?”
“When have I ever lied to you?” Fiona shot Michael a sideways look. In her mind, she was already calculating whether she should befriend Layla.
If Layla truly managed to survive a full year, she’d have somewhere to mooch meals in the future.
Or, she could serve Shane well. If she made him happy, he might reward her with a couple of bites to eat.
The jubilant crowd in the little courtyard had no idea how many people were hungrily eyeing their food.
These beastkin constantly redefined Layla’s understanding of human appetite. Only at times like this could she viscerally grasp that these people were beastkin, different from ordinary humans.
Just when Layla thought twelve water buffalo was a staggering number, enough jerky to feed them for a year, this group devoured an entire one in a single meal.
One whole, enormous water buffalo. Even though the tripe and organs Layla had offhandedly mentioned were edible, they urged her to cook those up.
Full and content, everyone was in high spirits. With each person lending a hand, the chaotic, food-strewn courtyard was tidied in no time.
For two days straight, Layla’s courtyard buzzed with lively chaos.
Yet Layla herself had become the most idle person there. Shane was the one who got busy.
Everyone had been pining for their own sets of cookware and tableware. With nothing else to do, Shane had simply agreed. He sat in the courtyard hand-molding pottery. Finished one set, started another. Finished that set, started another. The work was endless. His hands never stopped.
The weather was turning cooler. Processing all that water buffalo meat was no longer quite so urgent. Emily,

Hanna, and Yates were inside frying jerky. Liam and Blaze were busy butchering.
The construction crew was still building the courtyard wall, mixing mud and forming adobe bricks
Layla wasn’t idle either.
Emily’s cabin had four people, Hanna’s cabin two, plus Seren and Avery, her own household of three, and Liam. Twelve mouths to feet. The burden fell entirely on her.
Fortunately, none of them were picky eaters. Whatever Layla made, they devoured it in huge mouthfuls and showered her with praise.
Also, ever since the barbecue day, they wouldn’t stop talking about how fantastic Layla’s charcoal was. They pestered her into firing two more kilns of charcoal.
With so many hands, the work went fast.
In less than two days, Layla’s courtyard was finished.
However, as the infrastructure manager, she couldn’t just sit idly after finishing this courtyard.
She had to move on to the second one.
The second project she tackled was Hanna’s cabin.
They had asked first, after all. And Hanna was a female, no one objected to prioritizing hers.
The males all went over there to work. Layla’s side was left with just a few females.
When construction on Hanna’s place began, the Vanguards the production team had ordered from off- planet finally arrived. Everyone had their own Vanguard again.
After so many days without being filmed, Layla felt a brief moment of awkwardness at being recorded.
But it passed in a flash. She turned and greeted her live stream audience. “Hi! Can you hear me?”
[Yes, we can!]
