Chapter 18 Shane Blushed

Forshed
Just as Layla had trimmed away all the branches, leaving only the main trunk, Shane finally regained consciousness.
Now in human form, his mind was still a bit clouded. “What just happened?”
He rushed to Layla. “Are you alright?”
Layla pointed at herself. “Me? Shouldn’t I be asking you that, Prof. Slater?”
How smart does someone have to be to hit their head that hard and not turn into an idiot?
He said, “I heard a noise and came to check.”
Layla indicated the fallen tree. “You mean this?”
Shane examined the tree. The break was smooth on the edge, jagged in the center, indicating it had been whittled down before being snapped off.
He was surprised. “You did this yourself? Why didn’t you call me?”
Layla smirked. “I didn’t call you, but you still showed up.”
He just hadn’t been much help.
Shane admitted, “I thought you were in trouble and didn’t stop.”
“Can you move this?” Layla pointed to the trunk.
After her initial work, it had become easier to handle.
“Yes,” Shane replied. He was a brain worker, but that didn’t mean he lacked physical strength.
He wouldn’t survive days in the lab without it. He just hadn’t had a reason to use it before.
“You don’t need to carry it. Just roll it back.” Layla said.
The trunk was round now. Rolling it would be easy.
“Alright, you roll it back. I’ll get some bamboo.” Layla turned and headed for the bamboo grove.
She didn’t think anything of her phrasing. Neither did he. But the comments exploded.
[Wait, who taught Layla to talk like that?]
[For a moment, I thought she wanted Prof. Slater to roll.]

She also needed to prepare the bamboo strips Shane had requested.

The trunk was still heavy, and even though rolling saved energy, it took Shane a while to get it back.
Just as he rolled it back, Layla returned, dragging several thick bamboo poles, complete with branches and knots.
“You got that many?” Shane rushed to assist her and poured her a cup of water with one of the newly fired cups.
After a long morning, Layla was thirsty and gulped down the water, her eyes shining afterward. “You finished them?”
“Yes,” Shane confirmed. “All six turned out well, and I made two more pots for storing fresh
water.”
“Thank you,” Layla said, a smile lighting up her face.
Her hair was messy, but not sloppy. Sweat glistened on her face, and when she smiled, even the droplets seemed to shine.
Shane was momentarily mesmerized.
Layla set the cup on the stone. “Is the table easy to make?”
“It’s easier than pottery,” he replied, snapped back to reality, cheeks warming.
He was confident he could pull it off on the first try.
“Then it’s yours to handle,” Layla said.
Gazing at her small face, Shane felt his entire body heat up.
Is my heat coming early?
Counting the days, he shook his head.
It’s not time yet.
That’s strange. Maybe I should see a doctor.

Maybe pink spoonbills really are poisonous. Modern science still has gaps.
Layla ignored him, crouching to prepare the bamboo by trimming the branches. Instead of splitting the stalk, she cut it into sections.
“Making more bamboo tubes?” Shane asked, picking up a suitably sized bamboo strip and

starting to shape the distillation setup.
Layla shook her head. “Something better. You’ll see by tonight.”
