Chapter 19 Insulting Skills
[I’ve only truly gotten to know you today, Prof. Slater. So this is who you are.]
[My expression mirrors Layla’s.]
[Same here.]
[Me too.]
[Same.]
Before dinner, Layla finally finished weaving a nest and placed it in the pen, lining it with a layer of hay.

She pointed at the hen’s head and gritted her teeth. “If you don’t lay an egg by tomorrow, you’re done for.”
The new clay pot Shane had just made was ready, and Layla suspected it was shaped specifically for making chicken soup.
She gathered some edible greens nearby and tossed them into the soup just before it was done.
The broth was rich and delicious.
[I’m tired of saying this, but I want to eat that.]
[Why did they invent Vanguards that transmit smells? I can smell it but can’t taste it. Are they just trying to torture me?]
“How big can you make these pots?” Layla asked Shane, biting into a chicken leg.
Shane considered and gestured to a height of about a foot and a half. “About this big. Any larger, and it’s harder to control the heat. The failure rate goes up.”
Without a proper kiln, making pots this size was already impressive.
Layla nodded. “Then, after dinner, make a few more for me before it gets dark. I’ll need them
tomorrow.”
Shane agreed without asking what she needed them for.
After dinner, Layla went back to working with her bamboo segments.
[Does anyone know what she’s making?]
[I’m more curious about what she needs all those pots for.]

Layla ignored the comments.

As night fell, Shane’s clay pots were nearly dry. Just as he was about to extinguish the fire, Layla stopped him. “Leave it on. I have a use for it.”
[It’s the middle of the night, and she’s not sleeping. What does she need the fire for?]
[I don’t know either. That’s just what she said.]
Shane didn’t ask why. He simply said, “Need any help?”
Layla said, “You know what I’m doing?”
Shane nodded. “I can guess.”
“No. You take the treehouse tonight,” she replied.
[Layla, you shameless woman! Trying to steal someone else’s mate!]
[Someone else’s mate? Layla is the Grant family’s heiress. If anyone has a claim on Prof. Slater, it’s her. Stella stole her identity!]
[Does the head of the Grant family recognize her? The head clearly favors our Stella! Layla, vile woman!]
[Shane! If you dare go into her treehouse, you’re finished! Stella doesn’t want you anymore! You hear me? She’s done with you! You’ll be stuck with Layla forever!]
[What’s wrong with being stuck with Layla? Besides, Prof. Slater doesn’t need to rely on anyone. He can manage alone.]
[Can you all stop fighting? Aren’t you curious about what they’re planning?]
Of course, they were curious. But neither of them explained.
Under the watchful eyes of thousands, Shane climbed into the treehouse.
The comments exploded with insults.
Layla had some fans, but they were far fewer than Stella’s extensive following.
Shane’s students were brilliant in academia, but when it came to online shouting matches, they were no match for a full-blown fandom.
The comment section was in chaos.
Layla sat by the fire, tossing bamboo sections into the flames. Bored, she opened the comments and saw her few remaining fans being attacked.
