Chapter 20 Confronting The Wolf Pack
[You’re burning them? You spent all afternoon cutting that bamboo, and you’re just burning it?]
“It’s useful. You’ll see shortly,” Layla said.
[No secrets between family.]
“If you’re squeamish, get some sleep. Things might get a little bloody,” Layla said.
[I was feeling sleepy, but now that you mention it, I’m wide awake. Show me what you’ve got!]
“It’ll be intense. If you don’t sleep now, you might have nightmares for days,” Layla said.
Layla laughed lightly, appearing carefree despite the impending danger.
The stars, however, were skeptical.
[What is that?]
[Wolves?]
[What’s there to fear? She already killed one yesterday. It’s just delivering more food. She even said the last one was too skinny. Relax.]
[No! It’s not just one!]
[A pack! A pack of wolves is coming! Run!]
[I told you killing one wolf would bring the entire pack! Serves you right! You slut, just die!]
“Your eyes are sharp,” Layla replied with a laugh, looking at Vanguard with a gentle smile. “Close your eyes if you’re scared. It’ll be over soon.”
[Don’t give us your last words! Just run!]
[Get to the treehouse! Wolves can’t climb!]
“Howl!”
“Howl!”
The wolves howled in succession, their eerie green eyes emerging from the thickets. There were about fifteen.
Layla observed the pack as they assessed her, slowly closing in.
The distance shrank.

For a wolf, that distance could be covered in under two seconds.
“Howl!”
The alpha wolf led the charge, leaping toward Layla. Upon receiving the command, the pack surged toward her, as if afraid that lagging would mean missing out on a bite.
[It’s over! I can’t watch this!]
[I can’t look, but I can’t look away. This might be the last image of Layla!]
[Anyone else watching through their fingers?]
[Holy shit! How is she doing that?]
Moments ago, the screen buzzed with “Scared!” but now it was flooded with “Holy shit!”
Just as the pack lunged at Layla, she kicked a pile of bamboo tubes by the fire, sending them flying.
They exploded mid-air.
Crack! Crack!
The thunderous blasts startled the pack.
“Howl!” The alpha’s howl wavered.
The pack turned and began to retreat.
Layla didn’t give them a chance to flee. Knife in hand, she charged.
Behind her, the bamboo kept popping like firecrackers.
Her target was the alpha.
If she killed it, the pack would be leaderless, giving her a reprieve.
Amid the chaos, the wolves scattered. Transforming into her beast form, Layla pursued the alpha, leveraging her aerial agility to navigate obstacles.
Liam watched the footage from Vanguard, brow furrowed but a hint of amusement in his eyes. “Interesting.”
[General Hartwell, what are you doing? Hurry up and find Stella. She’s waiting for you.]
[Why are you watching that toxic waste? Go find Stella. Everyone else is already there. If you

wait any longer, you’ll be last.]
[He won’t be last. Prof. Slater hasn’t arrived.]
When Layla dragged the alpha wolf’s corpse back, Shane peeked out of the treehouse.
Moonlight fell on Layla’s face. There was blood on her cheeks, stains on her clothes.
“You’re back,” Shane said. There was a faint trace of relief in his voice.
