Chapter 190 The Rescue

Shane had little desire to save Liam-the man seemed to attract nothing but trouble. But Layla was adamant about rescuing him.

With a trace of resignation, Shane gave in-for Layla’s sake, he had no real choice.

Still, he made up his mind: once they found Liam, he was going to pin him down and give him a proper thrashing.

Just as they were running, the Vanguard’s comm device crackled back to life. Blaze’s voice broke through.

“Prof. Slater, what’s. the situation? I heard General Hartwell fell off a cliff, so I went to Layla’s live stream to watch. But the feed suddenly went spinning, then cut out entirely. What caused it?”

When it came to professional matters, Shane’s expression turned rigorously serious.

“Right now, the assessment is that something on the cliff face is interfering with the magnetic field. It affected the Vanguard’s controls, causing it to lose stability and crash.

“As for Liam, his condition is definitely not good. But he should still be alive. The beast tracks at the base of the cliff all lead in one direction. He’s most likely the one they’re chasing.

“We’re currently looking for a way down the mountain. When you arrive, don’t act recklessly. You can’t descend from the peak. Even flying won’t work. I currently have no way to determine whether whatever is disrupting the magnetic field will also affect beastkin.”

Shane’s tone was deadly serious, and it made Blaze instinctively serious in response. He took the warning to heart. “Alright. I’ll notify the others first. Prof. Slater, Layla, be careful. Keep the call open. We’ll stay in

constant contact.”

“No!” Layla grabbed Shane’s arm. “Searching like this is too slow!”

She reached up and seized the Vanguard hovering overhead. “Production team, send a few Vanguards over to help us find our way.”

She knew the production team was surely watching their livestream, preparing to respond to public sentiment at any moment.

They would definitely hear her.

But what happened next left Layla in disbelief. Her words hadn’t even faded when the Vanguard in her hand shuddered twice. Its screen went black.

“Shane?” Layla looked up at him.

A sharp, dangerous glint flashed in Shane’s eyes. “We can’t count on the production team anymore. We can only rely on ourselves.”

The Vanguard was dead. They couldn’t contact the production team. They couldn’t find Liam. They couldn’t even reach Blaze and the others.

Layla looked at Shane, whose expression had suddenly turned dark. For the first time, she realized she

Let’s go! We’re finding him!” Shane grabbed Layla’s hand and pulled her forward.

He still didn’t like Liam. But that didn’t mean he could just stand by and watch an Empire general fall under

his watch.

The Grant family had devoted itself to mecha research for generations, exhausting every generation in mecha design, all to cut down on soldier casualties for the Empire.

He didn’t like Liam. He could accept Liam dying in battle.

But not dying as a pawn in dirty power games. Not after he’d already decided to fight back.

Politically, he and Liam remained on opposite sides.

But Liam couldn’t die.

Compared to the parasitic, good-for-nothing officials of the Empire, Liam’s ambitions-troublesome as they were at least carried a shred of honor.

His obsession was a problem, yes. But next to those people, it barely registered as a flaw.

Shane had to find Liam. And he had to bring him back alive.

Layla could feel the cold fury radiating off him. He was angry.

Shane, who so rarely lost his temper, was now throwing the biggest fit Layla had ever witnessed in all the time she’d known him.

He was running so fast that Layla could barely keep up.

“Shane. Let me go down and take a look.” Layla grabbed Shane’s hand, pulling him to a halt.

“Take me with you.” Shane gripped her hand in return. “Take me with you. I’m going with you.”

Layla was speechless. “Do you think that’s realistic?

“Do you have any idea how big you are?

“There are trees below. Put me down in the trees. We’ll descend in stages.”

Layla couldn’t out-stubborn him. And she could tell his mental state was truly off.

She was silent for a moment, then nodded. “Alright.”

Just as Shane trusted her unconditionally, she was willing to give Shane her full support.

Especially since Liam wasn’t only connected to Shane. He had helped her, too.

By all reason and sentiment, Layla couldn’t watch Liam in danger and remain unmoved.

The moment Layla agreed. Shane shifted back into his beast form.
