Chapter 199 A Reluctant Alliance
He wasn’t, nor could he be, that generous to advise another male on how to pursue his own mate “Oh.” Liam’s head drooped, dejected. “Then can you at least figure out how to get me some clothes?”
Appearing before Layla in this state, his dignity was in tatters. He couldn’t even face her, let alone pursue her.
He wanted to crawl into a hole.
“No can do,” Shane answered flatly.
Under these circumstances, hauling Liam back from those beasts had already been a near miracle. And yet here he was, thinking about clothes and saving face.
“Stay naked.”
Liam seethed, smacking his lips, but kept silent.
When Layla returned, the two had fallen into another one of their eerie silences. Not a word between them!
Layla wondered if their conversation had faltered.
She glanced at Shane. His complexion seemed fine.
She turned to Liam. His expression was emotionless. But he also didn’t look happy.
She hesitated. “Why aren’t you talking?”
“I’m too embarrassed to speak,” Liam muttered, frustration evident in his tone.
“Why?”
“Because I have no clothes. I’ve lost all face.”
After a moment, Layla suggested, “I can get you an animal hide to cover up.”
“Really?” That seemed humiliating too.
He’d gone out fully dressed. Now he’d return with nothing but a pelt. Anyone with half a brain would figure out what happened.
Even if they couldn’t guess the specifics, they’d know he came back bare-assed.
The scene was too mortifying. He didn’t want to face it. But there wasn’t exactly another option.
“Fine.” It was the best option, better than not being able to shift back at all.
The moment she nodded, Layla headed out again. “You two talk more. Don’t fight.”
“She’s got a real master vibe, doesn’t she?” Liam cautiously lifted his head and looked at Shane.

Shane nodded. “Yeah. She does.”
Layla didn’t know what had passed between them, but she’d seen the tension and still given them space to
work it out.
“Then I… Liam hesitated, then asked quietly, “From now on, I’ll treat you as my big brother How about that?”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Shane’s head whipped down, his pupils narrowing to slits. Clearly not pleased.
“Don’t you get it? In the future, Layla won’t have only you at her side. George likes her. Anyone with eyes can see it. Right now, George is still tangled up in his own knots, but it won’t be long before he sorts himself out. Those two are already a done deal.”
“That’s just three of us,” Shane said.
“You think Carson doesn’t have feelings for her?” Liam’s eyebrow arched.
A challenge and smugness were written all over his face.
Shane’s mood soured instantly. Liam had said he’d look up to him as an older brother, yet he kept provoking him.
“Why would Carson have feelings for her?”
“I can’t say for sure, but a successful male like Carson wouldn’t choose a female like Stella. She’s just a parasitic vine.”
“Parasitic vine vines are actually quite strong. They kill their hosts through parasitism.” Shane corrected him with utter seriousness.
“I take your point. But she’s still a parasitic vine. If Layla weren’t here, Carson might make do with Stella. If all females were like that, he’d settle for second-best. But now someone has shattered every boundary previously set around what a female could be. He’s glimpsed another possibility.”
The fact that so many people who’d despised her had become her fans, Layla had something singular.
And that singular quality only needed a brief encounter to spread like wildfire through the soul.
During the short time Carson and Layla had spent together, he’d gone back and, on multiple occasions, casually praised her.
