Chapter 200 Recruiting a General
Layla had that magic. Everyone around her came to love her.
Liam stating it out loud only confirmed what Shane already knew deep down.
“I can only tell you this, cherish this time, while her heart is solely yours. Spend every moment with her. Later, if others come, her attention will inevitably be divided.”
When Layla returned, the silence had descended again.
She considered meddling, then decided it was above her pay grade, and moved off to skin the hide shed brought.
“Where did you get a lion?” Liam asked.
Shane moved over to help her.
“I picked it up over by the battlefield,” Layla said. It was the one Liam had killed earlier.
“The beasts have scattered.” Liam’s clothes had been shredded to scraps, barely even salvageable fragments.
But Layla, almost by instinct, didn’t mention this to him.
She wasn’t stupid. By now, it was obvious someone was targeting Liam.
The number of people who could have touched his clothes was small.
He knew who it was. He’d be on guard himself from now on.
“What are your plans?” Watching them work, Liam broke the pause.
Truthfully, what he wanted to ask was what plans they had for him.
“How far ahead?” Layla was in the middle of skinning a lion.
“After you take Planet A13.”
Layla’s hands paused. She looked up. “Didn’t you doubt me before?”
“Not anymore. Can you tell me your plans?”
With no outsiders here, Layla didn’t see why she couldn’t speak plainly in front of Liam. Still, she glanced at Shane for his opinion.
Shane nodded.
Layla was silent for a moment. “He’s planning a coup.”
The words dropped. Both Liam and Shane froze.
The two exchanged a look.

Liam silently asked Shane if he had told her that.
Shane responded with a look that implied it was Layla’s astuteness at play.
The smug, insufferable pride in Shane’s eyes left Liam speechless.
He turned to Layla. “Is that something you can just say?”
“Yes,” she affirmed firmly.
“You trust me that much?”
“I want to recruit you. From what Shane says, you have a well-trained military unit under your command. And the Hartwell family has an invincible, unbeatable legion.”
“The Hartwell Legion is a regular army,” Liam said.
“If you refuse to join, I’ll silence you permanently. Conveniently, someone’s already made an attempt on your life. One more knife wound from us, and no one would ever know. What do you think?”
Liam felt a pang of regret for asking.
Layla, meanwhile, had already turned to confer with Shane. “Do you think it’s feasible?”
Shane gave Liam a deeply meaningful look and twirled his knife in a casual flourish, his voice dripping with menace as he advanced. “General Hartwell. What is your answer?”
Liam was speechless. You’re actually playing along!
“Do I have another choice?” He cringed back, playing his part.
Shane turned to Layla, beaming. “Layla, he agreed.”
Layla gave Shane a satisfied thumbs-up. “Impressive!”
Is this really necessary?
But meeting Shane’s glare over Layla’s shoulder, he swallowed his retort.
He refused to stoop to their level.
A real man knew when to yield.
“Shouldn’t joining up come with a gesture of sincerity?”
Liam was cornered and had no choice but to relent.
They were both physically strong and sharp-witted, and he was injured.
Moreover, he needed their assistance, making confrontation impossible.
And there was another reason, one he couldn’t deny, he couldn’t refuse Layla.
Her demand for sincerity felt like a reminder that one must show commitment to those they cared about.
