Chapter 202 What Normal People Can See

Layla appeared to be stating the obvious when she retorted, “Any normal person could tell, right?”

Any normal person could tell?

Liam’s eyes widened as he pointed to himself.

Does that mean I am not normal?

What about Shane?

Shane must have noticed George’s feelings for Layla. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be so guarded around George

Surely, a normal person could see that George liked Layla.

Liam asked hesitantly, “I actually… didn’t notice. How did you figure it out?”

Layla finished dividing the meat and sat on a rock. She lifted the edge of the hide draped over his upper body and checked the bandaged wound at his waist.

A faint trace of blood had seeped through, but nothing serious. It looked like the bleeding had stopped and healing had begun.

“It’s starting to close up,” Layla said, releasing the animal hide.

When she looked up, she noticed Liam’s flushed face and the faint pink tinge on his neck. “Are you… hot?”

Liam had been agonizing over how to explain himself. At her words, he seized the lifeline and nodded furiously. “Yeah, I am a little hot.”

“Really?” Layla blinked and tugged at her own collar. “No wonder Shane says you male beastkin have strong cold resistance. It’s true.

“I’m actually getting a bit cold, and you’re feeling hot.”

Liam nodded, flustered. “Yeah, I’m hot.”

Seeing this, Layla assumed his hide was too tight and reached out to untie the cord securing the hide.

He recoiled like a startled animal and clamped his hand over hers. “What are you doing?”

“Huh?” Layla said. “You said you were hot, so I’m just loosening your hide.”

Liam’s face turned even redder. “Actually, it’s not that hot,”

At that moment, Shane returned. Layla’s hand was still on the cord. Liam’s hand was over Layla’s.

Shane stood at the cave entrance, arms full of dry firewood. Seeing the two of them like that, he fell silent for a moment before speaking slowly, “Did I come back at the wrong time?”

“No, no, no!” Layla snatched her hand back and hurried toward Shane. “It’s not what it looked like. I was just helping him loosen the hide.”

Shane went even more silent.

Realizing her words might have been unclear, Layla clarified, “Really, he said he was hot. And he has injuries. So, I was just helping him.”

Shane tilted his head, looking past her at Liam.

Liam met Shane’s gaze and sensed the exasperation in his eyes, the frustration of unmet expectations.

He pursed his lips, the corners drooping.

Shane looked at Liam’s pitiful state, drew a deep breath, and decided to help him out.

He set the firewood aside, wiped his hands, brushed the dust from his clothes, then took Layla’s hands and looked at her seriously. “I don’t mind.”

Layla looked up and met his earnest, gentle gaze, filled with acceptance and encouragement.

She paused slightly, instinctively wanting to ask something.

She felt like something wasn’t quite right.

She’d only been gone a moment, and the dynamic between Shane and Liam seemed to have changed completely.

“Shane?” She glanced at him, uncertainty creeping in.

Shane’s possessiveness toward her had always been fierce. It had never wavered from the very beginning. Yet now, all of a sudden, he didn’t seem to mind her relationship with Liam.

An inexplicable panic clutched her heart. She could barely breathe.

In her distress, she grabbed Shane’s hand.

“Yeah, I’m here,” Shane squeezed her hand back, his gaze still warm. “I understand what you’re thinking. I really don’t mind anymore.”

“No!” Layla stared at him with stubborn insistence. “Why don’t you mind? Why? You should mind, Shane. You can’t not mind. You have to mind. You clearly do mind!”

“Layla.” Shane placed his hands on her shoulders. “Layla, calm down. Listen to me.”

“I won’t listen!” She covered his mouth with her hand. “Don’t say it. I won’t listen to that. Say you mind. Say I’m only allowed to like you. Only allowed to be with you.”

Love required possessiveness. If even possessiveness was gone, then it was not real love.

She couldn’t bear the thought of Shane not loving her.
