Raising his voice, Shane called toward the cave. “We’re going to the battlefield to see if we can find anything

new.”

“Go ahead, but be careful and stay safe,” Layla’s voice floated out.

“Got it.” Shane agreed, then pulled Liam back the way they’d come.

Liam, being dragged along, was a bit annoyed. “If you want to research, go by yourself. I want to stay with Layla.”

“Can you use your brain for once? Layla’s spending time with George right now. What would you be if you

walked in?”

Liam paused, genuinely puzzled. “What would I be?”

“You’d be the third wheel,” Shane said.

“But Layla is also my mate. She agreed to marry me.”

“Since she’s agreed to marry you, you should know the rules,” Shane explained, “When a female with multiple mates is spending time with one of them, the others don’t interrupt.”

“Where did that rule come from? I’ve never heard of it.”

“It’s our family rule. That’s how my fathers have always done it since I was a child, and that’s how they taught me.”

“My dad never taught me that. I didn’t know.”

“Then I’m teaching you now.”

Liam nodded. “Got it.”

“This is where you and Layla fell from.” Liam pointed to the base of the cliff, then to another spot. I was pinned down by a pack of beasts right there. When I saw you two fall, my legs went weak with fear. I almost couldn’t keep fighting.”

“You’re faking it,” Shane scoffed.

His eyes practically sparkled with eagerness, clearly hoping the answer would be “Layla.”

He was destined for disappointment.

“Me.” Shane said casually.

“I thought it was Layla…” He stopped, realizing Shane hadn’t mentioned her name. “Why you?”

“Because you can’t die. And I didn’t want you to die either.”

Liam wondered if they were really that close.

“Shane, I feel like I don’t understand you anymore.”

“When did you ever understand me? If you could, you’d be the one teaching mecha design at Crownpeak University.”

Liam said, “I’m not talking about your mecha knowledge. I’m talking about the way you do things.”

“So what if you don’t understand? Even if you did, you wouldn’t learn it.”

Liam was momentarily speechless, nearly choking on his frustration.

Of the five of them, Shane had always been the most socially oblivious.
