Chapter 211 Chaos by the Campfire
“Do you know how gentle, kind, generous, and brave Layla is? And how sweet she smells?”
Liam was speechless. There it is. That last part is the only one that mattered.
He was silent for a moment, then nodded. “I know about the first two qualities, but the last one? I haven’t experienced that yet. You seem to know a lot. Have you tried it many times?
Shane said nothing. He turned and strode back toward the cave.
Liam. wounded, couldn’t keep pace and soon fell behind.
And Shane, rather than returning directly, would walk a stretch, then stop and wait when Liam couldn’t keep up.
Just as Liam was about to catch him, he’d speed off again.
It was humiliating
But he had no choice but to swallow his pride.
“Brother…” The next time he nearly caught up. Liam finally surrendered. “I was wrong. I shouldn’t have provoked you. You’re a generous man. Please forgive me this once?
Only then did Shane halt. He waited for Liam to catch up and then walked alongside him.
When they reached the cave, Layla and George had already built a campfire and roasted a portion of meat.
Layla was doing most of the work. George was making a mess.
Making a mess was the only accurate description.
He’d said he wanted skewers. Layla handed him a military knife and told him to whittle skewers himself. He’d promptly sliced his finger open.
With a sigh. Layla took the knife back. I’ll do it. You rest.
But George, stubborn to his core, couldn’t stand being underestimated.
Determined to prove himself, he kept at it.
And he promptly sliced another finger.
By the third finger, Layla couldn’t take it anymore. She snatched the knife from his hand. “If you’re really that bored, go call those two back for dinner!”
George looked wounded. He thrust his three bleeding fingers toward her. “I’m injured.”
Layla, busy whittling his skewers for him, glanced up at the three fingers.
They hadn’t even leaked three milliliters of blood total.

“If you’d shown me any later, they’d have healed already. Stop playing pitiful.”
“Who’s playing pitiful? I am pitiful!”
cuyting
“You’re pitiful? How about you just admit you’re useless? You can’t even whittle a stick without co yourself. What can you do?”
“I can be a singer,” George said with perfect righteousness. “I’m very popular, you know.”
“I don’t know!”
“Then you really miss out.”
“Don’t eat, then.” Layla had just passed him a skewer of roasted meat. At his words, she pulled it back.
“Layla!” George shouted, indignant. “Why are you so annoying?”
“If I’m so annoying, then stop liking me!”
“I’m not going to listen to you.”
Shane and Liam were still some distance from the cave when they heard the two of them going at it, voices rising with each exchange.
Liam shrank behind Shane. “Brother, you go.”
He wasn’t already the most favored. Layla hadn’t explicitly accepted him. Shane was the one who’d seen her hesitation and taken the lead in letting him stay.
He was the least favored. He couldn’t afford any more missteps. If Layla grew disgusted with him and drove him out, he’d have nothing.
Shane shot him a sideways glare and muttered, “Useless,” before striding in.
Liam, scolded, didn’t even feel wronged. He followed behind, shrinking into himself.
“Layla, what’s going on?” Shane asked, sitting beside her.
Layla handed him a meat skewer. “I said he’s useless. He can’t even whittle without cutting himself.”
Shane took the skewer, passed it to Liam, then freed his hands to ruffle Layla’s hair. He settled in next to her. “You’re right.”
Liam found himself suddenly holding a skewer. His mouth tugged upward into a doofy grin. It was a humorous sight.
Shane averted his eyes. Whenever Layla was around, all his attention was on her.
“But you have to admit that everyone has their strengths, right?” Shane took over the task from her, flipping the meat skewers. He added, “George was the one who wanted the skewers?”
“Who else could it be?” Layla said, exasperated.
He did no work yet was picky, leaving nothing behind.
