Chapter 212 A Family United
“Did you come on a standing-room-only ticket?” she asked Liam.
Liam jolted back to awareness. He shuffled over, arms and legs moving in unison, and sat down beside her.
It was so embarrassing!
Layla averted her eyes and reached out, taking the skewer from his hand.
Liam’s face instantly crumpled with hurt.
Before he could speak, a new skewer was pressed into his palm. “That one’s gone cold. Eat this.”
The one she’d taken from him went back over the fire.
Liam’s wounded expression hadn’t even fully faded before delight broke through.
Even if Layla hadn’t explicitly said she liked him, at least from her current attitude, she didn’t hate him.
That was enough for Liam!
Now that the ice had been broken, Liam actually started acting a bit stiff around Layla.
Layla found it awkward.
After so much time together, they’d long since grown familiar.
Liam’s current skittishness made it seem like she’d bullied him.
“Can
you stop with that cowering act? Do you think I’d kick you out?”
“You wouldn’t?” Liam’s head snapped up, eyes brimming with surprised hope.
Layla nearly coughed up blood.
He must really have a screw loose.
“If I were going to throw you out, why would I have bothered with you in the first place?”
She’d come all this way, risking her life to save him, and nearly fell to her death, only for him to ask such a stupid question.
Truthfully, she couldn’t fully define what she felt for Liam herself.
But it wasn’t nothing. Even if it hadn’t reached love yet, there was at least some affection.
Watching his dumbstruck face, she decided to ignore him for now. She turned to George across the fire, her gaze sliding over his already-healed fingers. “How far from here to home?”
“Pretty far. By water, maybe two hours. And the tide’s out now, we can’t easily get back to that same beach. I suggest we rest here a while, wait for high tide tonight to head back.”

It was only noon. High tide wouldn’t come for at least six hours. The trip back would take two hours, leaving them four hours to rest.
Liam’s wound needed more rest.
His abdomen had nearly been gored through. If it were anyone but Liam, they wouldn’t have lived long enough for self-healing to matter.
At the thought, Layla passed Liam another skewer. “Eat more.”
Liam took it, face bright with joy. Layla’s thinking about me.
“Where’s your Vanguard?” Shane asked George.
George shook his head. “It was following me. Then I don’t know what happened. It glitched and dropped into the ocean.”
He’d come by sea. The Vanguard was waterproof and had trailed behind him the whole way. Then it had suddenly vanished. At the time, he’d been too worried about Layla and the others to bother with it. He’d just glanced back at it and kept moving.
Shane and Layla exchanged a look.
Even the sea was affected.
“What exactly happened?” Shane pressed.
“Nothing much…” George stopped mid-sentence, eyes going wide. “Actually, I felt a tingling sensation, like an electric shock. Right after, the Vanguard dropped. That’s the cause?”
Shane’s expression grew heavy with confirmation. “Very likely. Do you remember how far that was from here?”
“Not far. Maybe two miles.”
“Where we fell, the distance to the ground was roughly two and a bit miles,” Layla said.
She didn’t know the exact distance, but she remembered how long she’d been in freefall.
She estimated the distance based on her flying time. “It might not be precise. We’d already dropped some distance when it hit.”
Shane turned to Liam.
Liam was quiet for a moment. “I didn’t fall from that spot. I fled there. But there was a moment when I was paralyzed too.”
