Curiosity was a dangerous trait, but Layla wasn’t particularly inquisitive.

In contrast, Shane was visibly intrigued.

As a mech designer, he felt compelled to investigate anything potentially relevant.

“Could it be a signal jammer?” Liam asked.

Shane shook his head. “I thought so at first.”

When they’d sent the Vanguard down, and it had suddenly plummeted, he’d assumed a jammer had severed its ability to receive commands.

But then he and Layla had been hit. George and Liam had felt it too. That meant it affected living bodies.

Ordinary jammers didn’t do that.

And Planet A13 was a frontier star, even though this area had been cleared, countless unforeseeable dangers could still lurk.

“Now, it seems it might be something else entirely.”

Realizing his initial assessment had been wrong didn’t chagrin Shane. It relieved him.

He’d begun to think those people would stop at nothing to eliminate Liam.

Now, maybe he’d misjudged them. Maybe they still had a shred of humanity.

More likely, they simply hadn’t discovered this exploitable point.

Either way, it was good news.

“Then let’s check it out,” Layla said.

“Shane and I will go. George, take Layla back.” Liam pulled the last piece of meat off his skewer and chewed methodically.

“Huh?” Layla raised an eyebrow.

Liam’s face was resolute. “The situation is uncertain. It could be dangerous. You two should return first.”

He was an Empire admiral, trained from childhood to protect those behind him, even if it meant facing danger himself.

If his father were alive and saw Liam shrinking back while others faced threats, he’d break his legs without hesitation.

“I’m going with you,” Layla said.

George had planned to escort Layla to safety, then circle back for them. Hearing she wasn’t leaving, the possibility of him leaving evaporated.

He didn’t speak, just lifted his chin in that haughty, prideful way that declared his stance entirely.

If there really was danger ahead, George and Layla going in would just be serving themselves up on a platter.

They were so disobedient!

But before he could open his mouth, Shane had already nodded his agreement. “Let’s go together.”

“Shane!” Liam snapped, his anger boiling over.

“Mm,” Shane replied casually.

He couldn’t refuse Layla.

Layla said, “We’re together now. Of course, we advance and retreat as one. If we don’t even know whether there’s danger yet and we already run, later, when real danger comes, do you expect us to abandon you without a thought too?”

“Of course!” Liam’s tone was dead serious. “Otherwise, knowing it’s a death sentence, you’d still stay to make a pointless sacrifice?”

Layla was briefly speechless.

She’d survived an apocalypse. She knew Liam’s logic held.

However, knowing a truth and acting on it were different things.

If a person possessed only reason and no emotion, they would be no different from a machine.

Even in the apocalypse, in conditions that brutal, she’d never abandoned her family or friends.

It was only at the very end, when all food was gone and the water sources were completely polluted, that everyone walked into death together.

“But we’re family,” Layla said, fixing Liam with a stubborn stare, “We can shoulder things together. Advance and retreat as one.”

“Family?” Liam faltered.

‘He couldn’t remember the last time someone had said that word to him.

Since his father had fallen, he’d had no family.

He’d clawed through survival alone, maneuvering through whirlpools of power, exhausting every resource and calculation he could command.
