“Based on the energy wave attenuation pattern, the source should be southeast. Straight-line distance, no more than a mile and a quarter.”

“I’ll lead the way and handle reconnaissance.” Liam shifted into combat mode almost by instinct. He rolled his shoulders, the wound in his abdomen still aching dully, but his eyes had recovered their usual sharpness “Follow me at fifteen feet. Stay alert.”

“Why should I?” George grabbed Layla’s wrist and pulled her closer, throwing Liam a challenging look. Im Number Two. Protecting Layla is my duty. You’re Number Three, so take the rear.”

A vein throbbed at Liam’s temple.

“We’re on a mission, not acting out a family drama!” Liam snapped.

“This is exactly what we’re doing.” George lifted his chin, speaking with righteous conviction. “My family’s

rules.”

Layla was speechless.

She felt her brain might genuinely be unable to keep up with these males.

“Both of you, shut up.” Shane’s cool voice was quiet, but carried absolute, non-negotiable authority.

He moved to Layla’s other side and, as naturally as breathing, took her remaining free hand. “Liam, scout ahead. George, cover the flanks. I’ll bring up the rear. Layla, stay in the middle.”

No one could fault the arrangement.

Liam gave a soft huff, tacitly accepting, and shifted into his sleek stag form. Hooves flew, and he vanished into the dense forest ahead.

George pressed in close to Layla, muttering under his breath. “See? I’m still the closest to you. Does that idiot even know what ‘protection’ means?”

Layla was bracketed between them. Her left hand held Shane’s steady, grounding warmth. Her right hand held George’s slightly calloused hand. In her ear, George’s ceaseless grumbling. Ahead, Liam’s athletic silhouette moves alertly through the terrain.

She suddenly found that this clamorous, chaotic feeling wasn’t bad.

In the apocalypse, she’d always walked alone at the front, no one behind her.

Now, she was solidly guarded in the center.

“Abnormalities detected!” Liam’s voice rang from ahead, cutting through her thoughts.

Liam stood before an enormous waterfall. Water thundered down into a deep pool below throwing up a sky-wide mist.

“This is a dead end,” George frowned.

“No,” Liam said, shaking his antlered head. “The sound is too uniform, and there are energy fluctuations behind the mist.”

Shane narrowed his eyes. He closed them, focused his senses for a long moment, then opened them. A spark of sharp light glinted in his gaze.

“He’s right. The energy source is behind the waterfall.”

“I’ll go in first and check.” Liam was already moving toward the cascade.

“Wait!” Layla grabbed his arm. “Let’s go together.”

She didn’t wait for his protest. Her wings unfurled, and a gentle current of air wrapped around all four of them, forming a temporary barrier. They plunged straight into the vast sheet of water.

The roaring thunder of the falls was instantly silenced.

Behind the waterfall lay a hidden world.

It was a colossal natural cavern. The walls were studded with countless unknown crystals, emitting a faint. ethereal glow that lit the entire space with the clarity of day.

But what seized them, what stole their breath, was the center of the cavern.

“What… what is that?” George breathed the words.
