Chapter 217 Waiting and Watching

They bickered constantly, yet when it really mattered, they could trust each other with their lives.

“Alright,” she nodded. “Be careful.”

Liam and George didn’t linger. One shifted into stag form and vanished silently through the waterfall’s curtain. The other drew a steadying breath and plunged after.

Once more, only Layla and the unconscious Shane remained in the cavern.

Time in waiting stretched infinitely.

Layla leaned against the cold stone wall, feeling the steady rhythm of Shane’s breathing beneath her hand Exhaustion, mental and physical, surged in like a tide. From Liam’s crisis, to her and Shane’s cliff fall, to the discovery of the Starcore Essence, to Shane’s collapse, her nerves had been pulled taut the entire time.

Her eyelids grew heavier and heavier. She was on the verge of sleep when the splash and thrash of water snapped her awake.

Liam and George were back.

Liam carried the dust of hard travel. Clearly, he’d covered ground.

George looked considerably more disheveled.

He was soaked through. Strands of river weed clung to his hair. In his hands, he wrestled two wildly flopping, very alive fish.

“Did you… go wade into a river to catch those?” Layla asked, taking in the sight. She almost wanted to laugh.

“What else?” George tossed the two fish, still thrashing their tails frantically, onto the ground, wiped the water from his face, and looked at her expectantly, hoping for praise. “This river has plenty of these around. It took me ages to catch just these two plump ones.”

Liam, beside him, silently produced a pack of compressed biscuits and a military canteen from his tactical pack and handed them to Layla.

“Get something in your stomach first. The way out isn’t easy to find. The cliff walls are too slick, and that energy is still active. Our original route is impassable.”

Layla took the compressed biscuits from Liam, broke off a piece, and chewed. The dry, crumbly texture made her frown.

Her gaze fell on the two fish still thrashing on the ground, then shifted to George, who was dripping wet from head to toe. She couldn’t help but let the corners of her mouth turn up.

“Not bad for you, Superstar. You’ve got some great skills when it comes to catching fish in the river.”

At those words, George immediately puffed out his chest and swept his wet bangs dramatically back, revealing a face that was entirely too good-looking. “Of course. Don’t you know who I am? The young prince of the Merfolk. Catching a couple of fish in the water is a piece of cake for me.”

Chapter 217 Waiting and Watching

He said it with such righteous confidence, as if he’d completely forgotten the earlier disaster of whunting a stick and butchering his own fingers.

Liam quietly organized his gear to the side. At George’s claim, he didn’t so much as lift an eyelid, only emitting a nearly inaudible “hmph” through his nose.

Layla observed the whole silent exchange with private amusement, but didn’t expose anything/

She finished the last of the biscuit and stood. “Alright. Light a fire, or are you planning to eat those raw!

“I’ll do it!” George volunteered.

The result was that he nearly set his own hair on fire with the sparks.

“Get out of the way!” Layla couldn’t take it anymore. She kicked him aside and quickly reignited the fire herself.

George crouched down dejectedly to one side, muttering under his breath, “Why are you being so mean? You’re not being gentle at all.”

Liam took the canteen Layla had drunk from, took a sip, and said, “The other side of the waterfall, there’s a way around. But the path is long and rough.”

The implication was clear, hauling an unconscious Shane along that route was near impossible.

“Then we wait.” Layla’s mind was made up. She efficiently cleaned the two fish, not even lifting her head. “We wait until Shane wakes up.”

Silence reclaimed the cavern. Only the soft crackle of the campfire remained, and the sizzle of fish oil dripping onto the flames.

The scent of roasting fish spread quickly.

George’s stomach let out an unapologetic growl. He stared at the fish in Layla’s hands, practically drooling.

Layla handed him the best-cooked piece, her tone acidic. “Eat. Starving ghost reincarnated.”

George’s stomach growled uncontrollably. He stared longingly at the grilled fish in Layla’s hands, his mouth watering.

Liam received a portion as well.

The three sat around the fire, eating in silence.

After the meal, Liam voluntarily took the first watch, settling near the cavern entrance with his knife cradled against his chest, and his eyes closed in rest.
