Chapter 218 The Power of the Grant Family

Fiona hurled her headset onto the desk and clawed at her hair. “Tell them! The contestants’ disappearance is an accident! We’re doing everything we can to locate them! Until we have confirmed information, we are not making any announcements!”

“But… Ms. Myers…” The staffer’s face was a mask of distress. “The Grant Group’s position is extremely hardline. They’re saying… if we don’t issue an official statement within twelve hours declaring that Layla and the other three have died in an ‘accident, they’ll immediately withdraw their investment and use every media channel to hold our production team accountable for ‘negligence resulting in death.”

“Bullshit!” Fiona’s face turned as red as a liver from rage. “What do they think they’re doing? They’re trying to murder them! I’ve been making shows for decades. I’ve never seen this level of brazenness!”

Despite her words, a chill ran down her spine.

She knew better than anyone the reach of the Grant family’s power.

If things came to a full-blown confrontation, her production team wouldn’t stand a chance.

On the screen, the live stream window for those four people remained black, while the live chat below had completely gone wild.

[It’s been twelve hours! A full twelve hours! Is the production team dead? Why haven’t we heard a single word!]

[What the hell happened to them? Just say something!]

[I heard the Grant family is pressuring the production team to declare them dead! Is that true? Stella, come out and say something! Aren’t you on good terms with them?]

[Haha, Stella? She’s probably hiding under the covers, laughing to herself right now! Once Layla’s dead, won’t those five men all be circling around her again?]

[Don’t talk nonsense! Stella isn’t that kind of person! She’s worried about everyone too!]

[The hashtag “The Grant Family Demands Layla Be Declared Dead” is trending on top! What does the Grant family want? Are they trying to profit off someone else’s misfortune?]

Fiona watched the frenzied live chat scroll by, feeling nothing but dizziness and disorientation.

She knew this situation was already beyond her control. And she wasn’t even sure if the four missing people ¡were safe.

Inside the cavern, Layla had fallen asleep against the stone wall without realizing it.

In her dreams, she was back in the apocalypse. Zombies everywhere. She, alone with a knife, cutting through mountains of corpses and seas of blood. No one was behind her.

“Layla…”

A faint call pulled her from the nightmare.

Chapter 218 The Power of the Grant Family

She jerked awake, momentarily disoriented.

Layla…”

The voice sounded again, hoarse, weak, yet unmistakably familiar.

She looked down and met a pair of open eyes.

Finished

Those eyes, which had always held such warmth and tenderness, were now slightly unfocused, yet they stared at her without blinking.

It was Shane.

He was awake!

“Shane!” Joy and shock collided, tears springing to her voice. “You’re finally awake! How do you feel? Does anything hurt?”

Liam and George jolted awake and crowded in instantly.

Shane’s lips moved, trying to speak. But he was too weak, only broken, indistinct sounds emerging.

Layla understood immediately and pressed the canteen to his lips, carefully feeding him a few sips.

The water soothed his throat, and some color returned to him.

He struggled to sit up. Layla quickly braced him, letting him lean against her.

“I’m alright.” Shane looked at the three gathered around him and managed a faint smile.

His gaze swept across Liam and George’s faces before settling on Layla. In those deep eyes, something flickered.

“George,” he said suddenly, his voice quiet but carrying to every ear with perfect clarity. “Just now, were you trying to take advantage of my unconsciousness to usurp my position as the second-in-command?”

George froze, then his cheeks flushed crimson as he stiffened his neck and retorted, “Who would do that? Don’t talk nonsense!”

“Oh?” Shane raised an eyebrow. Though he looked so weak he seemed on the verge of fainting again, his air of strategic mastery remained undiminished. “Then why do I seem to recall someone saying he wanted me to stay at the bottom of the pack forever?”

Layla was taken aback.

She hadn’t expected the desperate nonsense she’d spouted to jolt him awake would actually get overheard.

His hearing was sharp even while unconscious.
