Chapter 220 The Anchor
“I agree.
Liam’s words had barely faded when Layla spoke.
Though her tone was soft, it was clear.
“Layla!” Liam panicked.
Layla didn’t look at him. She just stared down at Shane in her arms and asked, word by word, “Tell me. What exactly do we do?”
She trusted Shane.
If he believed there was a solution, she was willing to take that risk with him.
They were family. They advanced and retreated as one. Those weren’t just words.
Meeting Layla’s stubborn, trusting eyes, Shane felt his heart wrapped in warm water. His limbs, cold and weak moments before, seemed to warm by several degrees.
He smiled gently, “It’s very simple. You put your hands on me. Clear your mind of all stray thoughts. And focus on the same thing.”
“What should we think about?” George interjected.
“Think about how we’re going to survive this. Get out of here.” Shane’s gaze swept across each of them. “Or think about a shared goal. A goal that none of us would ever waver on. No matter what.”
A shared goal?
Liam and George instinctively glanced at each other, then just as quickly averted their eyes.
It was unlikely they had any shared goals.
One wanted to revive the Hartwell Legion and restore his family’s honor.
One wanted to sweep Layla away to a quiet life of their own.
As for Shane, his mind was probably full of turning Planet A13 into the greatest mecha experimental base ever built.
‘Their goals, at the root, were in complete conflict.
Layla had clearly reached the same conclusion. She rubbed her temple, feeling a headache building.
It was a miracle they didn’t argue more. Expecting them to have a shared goal felt like a fantasy.
“Then, what if you all focus on me?” Layla suggested.
The words dropped, and Liam’s and George’s eyes lit up simultaneously.

“That works!” George was quick to voice his approval, casting Liam a triumphant glance, implying he still held special significance in Layla’s heart.
Surprisingly, Liam remained unfazed and nodded in agreement.
He would always put Layla’s protection first.
Shane looked at the two of them and sighed helplessly. But he didn’t object.
He knew it was the best option they had.
“Then that’s settled,” Layla declared. “Everyone, get in position. We’re starting.”
She adjusted her posture, letting Shane lean against her more comfortably.
Liam and George moved to either side of him.
“Where do I put my hand?” George asked.
“Anywhere,” Shane replied, voice drained.
George’s eyes made a quick circuit. Without a shred of hesitation, he placed his hand directly over Shane’s, the one resting on Layla’s shoulder.
This way, in a sense, he was indirectly holding Layla’s hand.
He gave himself a mental point for ingenuity.
Liam watched the whole petty maneuver, a vein pulsing at his temple. But he swallowed it down and silently placed his hand on Shane’s other shoulder.
Layla drew a deep breath and stretched out her own hand, placing it gently over Shane’s chest.
That was where his heart was.
She could clearly feel the steady, powerful beat beneath her palm.
“Close your eyes. Focus your mind.” Shane’s voice came, carrying a guiding note. “Empty out all stray thoughts. Don’t think of anything else. Just think of Layla.”
Silence reclaimed the cavern.
The campfire still crackled softly.
Three people, four hands, formed a peculiar connection through Shane.
Layla closed her eyes, trying to clear her mind.
However, mental synchronization was easier said than done.
Not even ten seconds had passed.
“Ugh!”

A muffled groan of pain suddenly escaped Shane’s throat, and his face paled even further.
Layla opened her eyes. “What’s happening?”
“George!” Liam ground the name out through clenched teeth. “What nonsense are you thinking?”
“I wasn’t thinking of anything!” George protested innocently. “I was just thinking of Layla!”
