Chapter 224 The Step Aside
Just then, a commotion stirred at the edges of the camp.
A contestant on lookout rubbed his eyes and pointed toward the distant darkness, disbelief cracking his voice. “Look! Look over there! Is that… is that General Hartwell and them?”
Everyone shot to their feet, heads whipping in that direction.
Four familiar figures were walking slowly out of the darkness and into the firelight of the camp.
Disheveled as they were, covered in dust, every one of them was perfectly intact.
Every gaze locked onto the four people who had walked back from the dead.
The Vanguard cameras at that moment all went berserk, training on them from every angle, broadcasting this theatrical moment live to the entire star network.
The grief and worry on Stella’s face, the instant she registered who it was, froze solid.
Across her eyes, for a split second, flickered an irrepressible shock, and venom.
But she was, to her credit, a master actress.
That flicker of emotion appeared only for a heartbeat before it was perfectly overwritten.
She clapped a hand over her mouth, her eyes brimming with tears of “joy,” exactly like someone reunited with family lost for decades.
“Layla!”
She only mouthed the word silently. Then, before anyone else could react, she was like a white butterfly taking wing, gathering her skirt and charging forward.
But her target was not Layla.
It was as if she completely failed to see Layla, Shane, or George. She ran directly, with a desperate, reckless determination, toward Liam.
“Liam!”
This time, she finally called it aloud. The sound was plaintive, saturated with the emotion of something lost and found.
She opened her arms and threw her entire body at him.
But in the split second before Stella’s frail form could fling itself into Liam’s chest, Liam, with absolute precision, took one clean step sideways.
He didn’t even bother to change his expression. His stern face remained as cold as ice.
Stella, who had thrown herself forward with all her strength, embraced empty air.

Fuished
The sheer momentum gave her no chance to brake. She stumbled forward several steps, her ankle twisting, and with a short, startled yelp, met the ground in a spectacularly graceless posture.
The white dress was instantly smeared with mud.
The camp went so silent you could hear a pin drop.
The live chat went blank for a full three seconds.
Then…
“Pfft!”
George was the first to break. The laugh that erupted from him was thunderous and utterly devoid of
courtesy.
That laugh was the signal.
The live chat was instantly flooded with a barrage of laughter.
[General Hartwell! Well done! The ultimate art of the straight man, precision footwork!]
[The embarrassment is palpable! Stella’s making a complete fool of herself in front of the whole Empire!]
[Did she forget Liam just saw the news her family posted? And she still tried to throw herself at him? What’s she thinking?]
Shane leaned on Liam’s shoulder, watching the scene before him. In his always-accepting eyes, a faint,
amused smirk surfaced.
Layla sauntered up to Stella at a perfectly unhurried pace, looking down from a height at the figure sprawled on the ground, face a mess of shock and humiliation, tears forgotten mid-fall.
She tilted her head. Her voice carried the perfect pitch of mild surprise and a sliver of genuine-seeming
concern.
“How could you be so clumsy and fall down like that? Did you get so excited seeing us that your legs gave out?”
Stella’s face reddened. She lay on the ground, watched by hundreds of millions, so consumed by shame and fury she wanted to claw a hole into the earth and burrow inside.
Layla, however, had no intention of helping her up. She just stood there, perfectly composed, watching her.
Then, as if a thought had just struck her, she lowered her voice to a register only those closest could hear and added, slowly, “Or could it be seeing us back alive disappoints you?”
Layla’s words hit Stella like a sledgehammer.
She was far more than disappointed.
Stella’s nails dug deep into the dirt. That pitiable little face twisted for a heartbeat in the firelight.
Everything she had meticulously planned and the ending she had thought foolproof had become the
