Chapter 227 The Second Prince’s Gambit
A weapon?
Layla turned the word over on her tongue.
She didn’t like being someone else’s weapon.
Just then, the personal terminal on Layla’s wrist gave a faint vibration.
She raised her arm.
On the screen was an encrypted message from an unknown sender.
Raising an eyebrow, she opened it in front of the others.
The message was brief. But its contents made the air in the tent solidify.
[The Grant family is maneuvering within the military, aiming for Liam’s command authority and rights to develop Planet A13.]
[The Royal Family is interested in the ‘abnormal energy’ and can offer support if needed.]
[Sent by Oliver.]
Oliver, the Second Prince of the Empire, was known for his caution and reluctance to take sides.
Liam’s demeanor grew icy at the mention of his name.
George leaned in, not fully grasping the jargon but understanding the core meaning. “The royal family
wants a share?”
“He doesn’t want a share,” Shane replied, struggling to sit up as he scrutinized the message. “He wants to complicate things even more.”
Layla turned off the screen.
The situation was becoming intriguing.
The Grant family sought to eliminate them, a faction within the family aimed to exploit them, and now the Royal Family was involved.
And the center of all of it was that small, unassuming stone in her pocket called Starcore Essence.
The four of them, without even realizing it, had stepped directly into the storm’s eye of the Empire’s highest power struggle.
Layla suddenly felt that she didn’t hate this world quite so much anymore.
In the apocalypse, her focus had solely been on survival.
Here, it seemed she could play a far bigger game.

Chapter 22 The Second Punce’s Gambit
She looked at the three men sitting or lying in the tent, a top-tier mecha designer, an Empire general and a prince of the merfolk.
It was a promising lineup.
“Layla,” Liam said, his voice deep and serious. “You can’t trust the royal family.”
“I know.” Layla nodded.
Of course, she knew. Those entangled in political schemes were often untrustworthy.
“But,” she changed the subject, a faint smile playing at the corners of her mouth, “why shouldn’t we accept their olive branch?
“Since they all want a show, we’ll give them a damn good show.”
Layla stood and walked to the tent entrance, lifting a corner of the flap to look out at the brilliantly lit camp beyond.
Her voice was soft, but it carried an unshakeable certainty.
“Let them squabble. Let them grab. Ultimately, the fate of this planet rests with us.”
George was the first to snap out of his shock. He looked at Layla, his eyes gleaming with a light he didn’t even recognize himself in, as if he’d spotted some novel and thrilling prey.
“Going all out?” He whistled. Far from being afraid, he was practically vibrating with excitement. “I like it! Count me in!”
Liam, however, had a contrasting response.
He was frowning deeply as he rose from the ground. His tall frame cast a long shadow inside the tent, carrying an almost tangible pressure.
“Layla, this isn’t what we agreed on,” he said heavily, his words reflecting a soldier’s stubbornness. “My objective is to reclaim what belongs to the Hartwell Legion, not to get dragged into a royal power struggle.”
“What’s the difference?” Layla turned back to look at him, her expression perfectly level. “Do you think you can reclaim what’s yours without this planet? The Grant family can shake your military authority so easily. precisely because they have money, resources, and the power to buy loyalty.”
Liam was at a loss for words.
He couldn’t argue.
Soldiers needed to eat, and mechas required maintenance and upgrades. It all boiled down to money. Since the Hartwell family’s fall, the Legion’s supplies had dwindled, leaving them a mere shadow of their former strength. This was a deep thorn in his heart.
“But the royal family…”
