Chapter 25 Cohabitation Agreement

“And it never will be.” Shane looked at Layla seriously.

He was unsure what he was being so stubborn about, but the idea of Layla wanting to send him to Stella filled him with resentment.

After some thought, he concluded that she had no sense of contractual obligation.

Even a verbal agreement was an agreement. She couldn’t just break it whenever she wanted.

He stood up to grab his bag.

As a professor, he had ways to enforce rules with disobedient students.

While preparing eel, Layla paused to see him writing, Cohabitation Agreement.

A Cohabitation Agreement? Is this even a real thing?

After grilling the eel, Layla washed her hands and leaned in.

The page was dense with text. He was still writing, adding clauses that outlined their responsibilities for eating, drinking, hygiene, clothing, food, housing, and transportation.

The first clause stated that neither party could unilaterally terminate the agreement.

“That’s enough.” Layla, accustomed to the post-apocalyptic world, didn’t trust contracts.

If there was food, they’d cooperate. If there wasn’t, they’d turn on each other.

She’d seen this kind of thing too many

times.

In the post-apocalyptic world, a contract was nothing more than a piece of scrap paper.

But seeing how seriously Shane took it, she didn’t say that.

“See if there’s anything you want to change.” Shane handed her the paper.

Layla glanced at the text and shrugged. “I can’t read.”

“I know you can read,” Shane replied.

Layla was speechless. Won’t you give me even a shred of face?

[Layla failed to get away with it.]

[She still doesn’t quite understand Shane. We’ve tried every trick, and none of us ever escaped him. Yet she dared to argue against his decisions. How brave.]

Shane handed the pen to Layla.

Holding the cohabitation agreement, Layla met Shane’s gaze but hesitated to take the pen.

Shane stared back at Layla, but didn’t put the pen away either. Their gaze was less a meeting of eyes and more a standoff.

“What are you worried about?” Shane asked.

Layla pressed her lips together, uncertain of her worry, but signing a contract felt like selling herself.

This wasn’t the apocalypse. Here, a signed contract meant responsibility, and Shane seemed serious about it.

“Worried I’ll cling to you?” Shane probed.

The comments exploded.

[Prof. Slater, aren’t you already clinging to her?]

[What is Layla hesitating for? Shane is Crownpeak’s only tenured professor! The genius mech designer! Just sign it!]

youngest

[But this is a survival show. Genius mech designers don’t have much room to shine here. Layla’s hesitation is understandable.]

Layla thought about it. Actually, Shane had a point.

Perhaps she truly feared being clingy.

“Fine. I’ll sign.” She took the pen and scrawled her name. “Are you satisfied now?”

Two copies were made, and they each took one.

Shane nodded. “Are you making the omelet now?”

You’ve really got me in your pocket!

Shane said, “I found a coconut grove. I’ll take you tomorrow to get some.”

Layla’s eyes brightened.

She had a personal grudge against seawater after multiple failed attempts to extract salt and fresh water, interrupted by Stella’s males.

She was developing a phobia. If she could get coconuts, she could go without salt for a while.
