Chapter 27 Cleaning The Lion’s Innards

The attack missed again, and the pink spoonbill ascended into the sky.
The lion, having failed to land a hit, had no interest in continuing the fight.
It was indeed the king of the savannah and possessed some intelligence. Realizing that staying any longer meant certain death, it turned and fled.
But as it turned, a snake coiled around its neck.
A king cobra’s constriction was more than enough to bring down a full-grown lion.
A crack echoed, and the lion collapsed.
The king cobra’s scales were flecked with blood, wild and imposing. It released its grip and shifted back into human form.
“That’s impressive,” Layla said as she climbed down from the tree, giving Shane a thumb-up.
Shane remained composed. “It wouldn’t have survived anyway.”
With Layla’s knife piercing the lion’s skull, even if it limped away, it wouldn’t live long.
He only intervened to leave the carcass for the camp, sparing them the chase.
Layla said, “No need to be modest. I thought you were just a weak scholar who couldn’t even defend yourself.”
[What a huge misunderstanding! Prof. Slater’s fangs can puncture mech armor.]
[Not her fault. Based on his behavior the last few days, he did come across as a food-obsessed pushover.]
[True, he hasn’t shown his true abilities.]
[What good would it do? Anything he bites is only safe for him to eat. Anyone else would be poisoned.]
[Quick question, if someone kissed him, would they get poisoned?]
[Probably fine as long as no tongues involved? No biting, no poison?]
[Keeping going. I love it.]
Layla bled and skinned the lion, tossing its pelt and two wolf pelts together. “I’ll fluff them up tomorrow and put them in the treehouse for winter warmth.”

Shane nodded as he built a table nearby.
[No nails. Will this table be sturdy?]
:
[Prof. Slater uses mortise-and-tenon joints. It’ll be sturdy for at least three months unless damaged.]
Layla smiled while processing the lion. “This lion’s not bad. It has some fat.”

Shane looked up from assembling the table and asked, “Can lean meat be made into jerky?”
“Yes. Jerky is easy to preserve and can last a year or two without moisture.”
“Do you eat boudin noir?” Layla asked, holding the lion’s innards. “Let’s consume these tomorrow. They won’t keep.”
“Is it good?” Shane asked.
They primarily relied on nutrient solutions. A busy man like Shane seldom had time to eat, managing only a few proper meals throughout the year and mostly subsisting on nutrient solutions.
Food wasn’t a necessity to him. But since arriving here and tasting Layla’s cooking, he had started to appreciate flavor.
“I don’t know. I’ve never eaten lion before.”
“Let’s give it a try.”
“Lion’s head,” Layla chopped off the head and held it up to the clay pot. “It fits! Let’s cook it!”
Without hesitation, she stuffed the lion’s head into the pot and added water to simmer.
Layla said, “Too bad we don’t have enough seasonings.”
[Is lion meat actually edible?]
[I’ve never seen anyone eat it before.]
[I’m so curious what it’ll taste like.]
“Keep an eye on this.” Layla carried the innards away to clean them.
Shane glanced at the pot and swallowed. “Okay.”
Before starting, Layla looked up at her Vanguard. “Maybe you shouldn’t watch this.”
[I’m the kind of person who always listens to advice.]

[I won’t! I’m the kind of person who always acts contrary! I’m definitely going to watch this!]
[You really should listen. It’s intestines. You know what’s in intestines, right?]
Layla merely warned. Whether they listened was beyond her.
She began pulling down the large intestine.
[Yuck!]
[Yuck!]
