Chapter 286 What About Us?
[Doesn’t feel like a date at all. Haven’t you noticed how detached Carson still seems? Layla’s just going to comfort him and draw him into the group.]
The live chat’s guess was spot-on.
Walking beside Carson, Layla watched him inspect every inch of the defense barrier with meticulous precision.
The tight furrow between his brows slowly eased as he finished his thorough check.
Satisfied with the structure’s stability, Carson turned to Layla. “This barrier adopts the galaxy’s top-tier new/ defense technology. The Grant Family had no hand in its research or investment, so there should be no hidden flaws this time around.”
Layla knew full well all the underhanded schemes the Grant family had orchestrated behind the scenes.
She arched an eyebrow, curious. “What’s your take on the Grant family now?”
Carson lapsed into a heavy silence.
He maintained long-standing business ties with them, and their superficial relationship had always seemed amicable.
Yet their ruthless vendetta against Layla spoke volumes about their flawed family values and warped upbringing.
Instead of giving a direct answer, Carson tossed the question back to her. “What do you think they’re really after?”
Layla folded her arms and let out a cold snort.
The Grant family lived in fear of her influence, consumed by petty hatred, determined to eliminate her by
any means necessary.
“Whatever their hidden motives may be, the entire galaxy has now seen their true, ugly colors.”
Though Layla paid little mind to the Grant family’s trivial affairs, George’s constant ramblings had kept her fully informed.
After Stella’s scandal broke out, the Grant family’s reputation collapsed overnight.
Business partnerships dissolved overnight, investment funds were withdrawn, and even their long-standing industrial ventures fell into turmoil.
That was why they’d rushed to issue public statements and rush up damage control.
Had their reputation remained untouched as before, they would have dragged their feet indefinitely, letting Stella stay on the show without a second thought.
One only felt pain when the blade cut close to their own flesh.

What About Us?
A cold, inscrutable glint settled in Layla’s eyes.
A broad, warm hand suddenly rested gently on her shoulder.
Carson’s voice was low and steady. “No matter what unfolds, I stand firmly on your side. Once this program wraps up. I will personally sever all business connections with the Grant family.”
Surprise flickered across Layla’s face. Carson intends to cut ties with the Grants completely?
She parted her lips to speak, only for Carson to shake his head and stop her.
This isn’t merely for your sake. Everything that’s happened makes it clear the Grant family will eventually self-destruct from their own arrogance and corruption. They’ll drag everyone connected to them down with their mess. It’s only wise to cut ties early and avoid getting entangled.”
Carson saw through the whole situation with remarkable clarity, his resolve unshakable.
A soft smile tugged at Layla’s lips as she looked up at him. “What about you and me?”
Confusion clouded Carson’s eyes at her bright, earnest gaze, his words coming out stilted and flustered. “Layla… w-what exactly do you mean? Is it what I’m thinking?”
Layla burst into a light laugh, tilting her head and blinking playfully at him. “You had no romantic ties with Stella. Then what about us? What are we to each other?”
Carson’s face flushed crimson little by little. Layla’s smile grew brighter by the second.
There was endless amusement in watching this stoic, principled man grow shy and flustered.
She held her tongue, staring straight at him in quiet silence, waiting for him to gather his thoughts and speak.
Carson pressed his lips tight, his hands clenching nervously into fists
He’d long pondered the nature of their bond.
Shane, George, and Liam all had clear, acknowledged connections with Layla.
For himself, he was merely a member of her team—nothing more, none of her chosen mates.
A faint sense of loss settled heavily in his chest at the thought.
