Chapter 287 Save a Stranger

Carson’s primal instinct dictated that he prioritize protecting the group first. Only after laying a sohd emotional foundation would he acknowledge and define his bond with Layla.

With him falling into quiet step behind her, the pair continued their methodical inspection of the newly installed defense barrier.

Their path led them farther from the main camp, into a wild, desolate stretch of uninhabited woodland.

Layla was about to suggest turning back when faint, pained groans drifted on the breeze.

Her senses sharpened in an instant. Turning toward the sound, she furrowed her brows shghtly.

Someone lay injured nearby, their weak moans laced with obvious agony.

As she was hesitant to venture deeper alone, Carson took the initiative and strode toward the source of the

noise.

A soft, amused smile played on Layla’s lips at his innate sense of responsibility.

There was undeniable charm in a man who stepped up to the plate without hesitation.

Following close behind, she rounded a thick cluster of tangled branches and spotted a male contestant seated beneath a tree, his face twisted in pain.

A faint scent of blood hung in the air around him.

Carson knelt down beside him, his tone low and calm. “What happened?”

Lifting his head, the man looked vulnerable and helpless. “I climbed up to pick wild fruit and slipped off the branch. I badly twisted my ankle on the fall.”

Layla glanced down at his injury.

His ankle swelled grotesquely, bulging like a plump egg.

She crouched down beside him with a helpless sigh.

His face looked vaguely familiar-one of the program’s other contestants, with whom they’d never crossed paths much before,

Scanning her surroundings, Layla recalled a patch of medicinal herbs growing a short distance back along ‘the path.

She patted the man’s shoulder gently. “Stay right here and don’t move. I’ll fetch some herbs to treat your

sprain

The live chat erupted in instant praise for Layla.

(Only Layla would know how to forage and use wild medicinal herbs out in the wilderness!)

Dad anyone catch Mr. Fields expression just now? He frowned the second Layla touched that stranger’s

shoulder!]

[Is he jealous? I’d bet my life he is!]

[No doubt about it! Who knew calm, reserved Mr. Fields had such a jealous streak?]

Too busy gathering pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory herbs to glance at the live chat, Layla missed Carson’s rare display of petty jealousy.

Left alone with the injured man, Carson kept a silent, watchful guard over him.

When Layla returned with an armful of freshly picked herbs-more than enough to treat the sprain fully- she found Carson gently kneading the stranger’s swollen ankle.

Sharp gasps of pain escaped the man. “It hurts… go easy!”

Layla hurried forward, swatting Carson’s hand away lightly. “You’ll only aggravate the injury doing it like this.”

Carson scratched the back of his head awkwardly.

Back in his pack days, this was their standard way of treating sprains-firm kneading to boost blood circulation and reduce swelling.

Stepping back silently, he stood aside and watched Layla work intently.

Her movements were slow, precise, and gentle.

She stabilized the injured ankle first, then crushed the herbs on a nearby stone slab before applying the soothing herbal paste carefully to the swollen skin.

Layla rubbed her palms together, ready to press gently into the wound to work the herbal remedy into the muscles, when Carson suddenly blocked her path, his brows drawn tight. “What are you doing?”

Layla looked up at him as if the answer were obvious. “Just spreading the paste isn’t enough. I need to massage it in to let the medicinal properties sink into the tissue.”

Carson pressed his lips, then rolled up his sleeves without another word.

Catching the displeasure flickering in his eyes, she stifled a secret laugh.

He hated the thought of her touching another man’s injured ankle.

She crouched beside him, lowering her voice to guide him/softly. “Go slow, press gently in small circular motions right here.”

Caught between the two tending to his injury, the stranger scratched his head awkwardly.

He felt like an awkward third wheel intruding on an intimate moment.

Watching the scene unfold, the audience burst into endless shipping comments.

[Layla and Mr. Fields are made for each other-brave and steady, clever and kind-hearted.]
