Chapter 288 It Works for Now
Layla had never been one to go out of her way to help strangers. Her physical strength was limited, and there was no way she could support a grown man on her own.
The shy stranger climbed carefully onto Carson’s back, and the pair escorted him safely back to his camp.
To Layla’s surprise, the injured man was none other than Harvey Dent, a member of Daisy’s team.
After arriving on Planet A13, Daisy had formed a new group with several unattached male contestants lef behind after other female participants quit the program.
Spotting Harvey Dent being carried over by Carson, Daisy hurried over with clear concern etched on her face. “Harvey, what happened to you?”
Harvey slid slowly off Carson’s back, his cheeks flushed as he looked at Daisy. “I’m fine. I just climbed a tree to pick fruit for you and slipped off the branches.”
Then he reached into his chest pocket carefully, pulling out a handful of fresh wild fruits he’d gathered before his fall.
Layla rested her chin in her hand, watching Daisy with a knowing look.
Daisy’s face flushed the moment their eyes met.
She helped Harvey into their cabin first, then stepped back outside to talk privately with Layla. “Don’t look at me like that. He’s genuinely a good person at heart,” Daisy mumbled awkwardly.
Layla held up her hands in innocent surrender. “I haven’t said a word yet. Why are you already confessing?”
Daisy’s blush deepened even further.
Nudging Daisy playfully with her shoulder, Layla asked, “So? Are you planning to take him as your mate?”
“I’m still thinking it over. But compared to the other two men in my group, Harvey’s definitely the better match,” Daisy admitted.
Quick to change the subject before Layla could tease her more, Daisy glanced over at Carson, who stood silently in the distance like a motionless statue.
She lowered her voice to a whisper. “What about you? What’s going on between you and Mr. Fields?”
Now the one being gossiped about, Layla laughed softly.
After a moment of serious consideration, she said, “We’re just teammates for now. I still don’t know how he truly feels about me.”
But Daisy thought Carson’s feelings didn’t matter that much.
She was far more curious about the other men’s reactions.
“What about Shane and the others? Have they said anything?”

Layla folded her arms, a proud smile on her face. “My Shane’s the sweetest. He even told me I should take Mr. Fields into our group, too.”
A flicker of envy passed through Daisy’s eyes as she watched Layla. “Thank goodness Shane was your firsi.” she murmured.
Layla’s laughter was light, almost playful. “Can you imagine how the other two would have been?”
Shaking her head with a touch of exasperation, Daisy let out a small sigh. “All I’m saying is, be careful. You don’t want a full-blown civil war on your hands.”
“How could that possibly happen?” Layla replied, her expression turning serious.
“You tell me.” Daisy countered. “Look at your crew now-it’s getting crowded. And we have an actual prince in the mix. Have you seen how George and General Hartwell act around Oliver? You think they’ll just rol out the welcome mat?”
The mere mention of it made Layla’s head throb faintly. She reached up and massaged her temples.
George and Oliver were like oil and water, their bickering a near-daily soundtrack.
Without Shane playing peacemaker, Layla would have spent half her days playing referee.
She pinched her chin thoughtfully. “Still… I want to keep Oliver.”
True, the prince worked at a pace that could try a saint, but a lifetime of royal training had instilled in him an obsession with perfection.
The gardens he tended were a testament to that-each bloom placed with painstaking care, every path impeccably maintained.
A soft sigh escaped Layla, her eyes clouding with a kind of weary acceptance. “It’s fine. It works for now. Everyone’s getting along… mostly.”
Seeing she wouldn’t budge, Daisy let the matter drop.
Her gaze drifted toward Carson, who stood a little distance away, pretending disinterest while clearly listening to every word.
Daisy leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “For what it’s worth, I think Mr. Fields is wonderful. Really suited for you. Think about it.”
A warm, knowing smile touched Layla’s lips.
Of course I know. Wasn’t that why I sought his opinion just now?
She gave Daisy’s shoulder a gentle, reassuring pat. “Go on, tend to your Harvey. We should be heading back.”
The daylight was fading, painting the sky in soft hues of orange and purple.
