Chapter 289 The Mysterious Golden Mutant Beetle
Walking behind Carson, Layla hid a quiet smile to herself.
The live chat flooded the screen with excited reactions.
[Layla’s flirting game is unbeatable! Mr. Fields is totally flustered and lost.]
[I’d be tripping over my own feet if she looked at me like that.]
[There’s something uniquely different about how Layla acts around Carson compared to the others.]
[No wonder teasing a quiet, serious man like him is way more fun.]
The live chat voiced exactly what Layla was thinking.
She never needed to tease Shane, George, or Liam-their affection for her was open and unreserved. But Carson was different, reserved and stoic, and she couldn’t help but enjoy riling him up gently.
Staring at his broad back, she quickened her pace to follow closely behind.
Warm golden sunlight filtered through the treetops, painting the woodland path in soft amber hues. Layla hummed a quiet tune as they walked.

A sudden flash of dazzling golden light caught her eye.
Something small and shiny crept slowly among the underbrush.
Curious, she stopped and leaned down for a closer look.
It was a beetle, resembling a common scarab, yet its shell shimmered like pure molten gold under the sunlight.
Layla tapped its shell gently with her finger; surprisingly, a dull hollow thud echoed beneath her touch, the surface feeling almost metallic.
Human instinct was inherently drawn to all things golden and precious. She reached down and picked the beetle up carefully.
It wriggled restlessly in her palm, its tiny legs flailing about, looking oddly cute.
Carson turned back at the pause in her footsteps, spotting her holding the golden beetle and staring at it thoughtfully.
He stepped over for a closer look, his expression turning grave and serious in an instant.
“This isn’t right. This is a Carapax Beetle-but they never come in solid gold,” he muttered.
Carson was intimately familiar with all manner of wild insects from years of outdoor survival.
He could identify this as a Carapax Beetle instantly from its shape and unique natural scent.
Carapax Beetles only came in three natural color phases: jet-black larvae, earthy yellow during molting, and

green-gold once fully mature.
A pure gold variant had never been documented across the galaxy.
“Is it a mutated specimen? Or an entirely new undiscovered species?” Layla asked.
Carson shook his head slowly. “I can identify most common insect species, but there’s no telling if this one’s undergone a genetic mutation”.
A sudden thought of Shane surfaced in Layla’s mind.
He’d probably know something about this insect.
They still had a long life ahead of them on Planet A13.
If this bug was truly mutated, they’d need to find out why.
The last thing they needed was a threat to everyone’s health.
Carefully, she placed the insect into a small pouch on her belt and quickened her pace, following Carson back toward their cabin.
They found Liam and George had already returned from the hunt.
The fruits of their labor-a wild hare and a young boar-lay discarded in the small yard.
From a distance, the familiar sound of bickering reached Layla’s ears. George and Oliver were at it again.
“I just finished clearing that spot by the entrance, and you go and dump your stuff right on top of it! When Layla gets back, she’ll think I slacked off,” George protested, his voice tight with frustration.
“What you call ‘work, I call cutting corners. If I were handling it, the result would be far superior,” Oliver
retorted.
“Then why did Layla ask me to do it and not you? Seems she knows who does a better job.”
Layla rubbed her temples, a wave of weariness washing over her.
The idea of playing kindergarten teacher held zero appeal.
Carson, however, reacted differently. Hearing the argument, he strode ahead with a frown, inserting himself squarely between the two men.
His gaze, sharp and silent, moved from George to Oliver.
The brewing quarrel died on their lips under his steady scrutiny.
Satisfied, Carson finally spoke, his voice low and firm, “Enough.”
Watching him defuse the situation with such ease, Layla silently cheered.
Shane always has to work so much harder to get them to quiet down. This might be a job for Carson from now on.
