Initially, their defensive line was merely a simple courtyard wall meant to keep wild beasts at bay.
But as they worked on the construction, Layla’s ideas kept multiplying.
With each suggestion from Layla, Shane’s excitement grew.
When Layla proposed mixing prickly grass into the wall’s mud, Shane looked at him as if wishing they had met earlier.
Prickly grass was a common weed. When it grew on the ground, it wasn’t particularly harmful, but once it was crushed into fine fibers and mixed into the soil, the fibers would cling to beastmen’s skin the moment it touched the dirt, causing an excruciating itch that wouldn’t subside for at least three days.
While seeking medical treatment outside would be simple, doing so on Planet A13 during their show would mean ejecting from the competition.
[How high can a mech designer’s moral standards be?]
[You know that mech dog that chased enemies while singing? That was him.]
[That “Bumblebe” that shoots an unknown number of needles? Also him.]
[Military academy student here. I almost died to that thing in exercises. The worst part? The person who deployed it didn’t even know how many needles it had.]
[And the needles only paralyze. You’re completely conscious the whole time. You get to watch yourself being captured or killed. What happened to treating prisoners well?]
With the fence complete, Shane looked at Layla with increasing admiration and asked, “Are you interested in coming to Crownpeak University?”
Layla raised an eyebrow. “What for? Be your student?”
Shane shook his head, disapproving of teacher-student romances. “Be my teaching assistant.”
“I’ll think about it.” Layla didn’t outright refuse, considering potential future benefits.
Shane didn’t push, saying, “Let me know when you’re ready. I’ll arrange it.”
[I can’t imagine what toxic chemistry these two would have if they got together.]
[A toxic waste and an unethical mech designer. Perfect for each other. Just stay away from

Stella. She already has Wolf Boss, George, General Hartwell, and Prince Oliver. She doesn’t need more.]
[Why are you, Stellights, always here? It’s disgusting. Prof. Slater already said he’s not Stella’s fiancé. Leave him alone.]
[You guys are so disgusting!]
“Next, it’s time for…” Layla observed the transformed courtyard, a flash of venom in her gaze as she stroked her chin.
Shane glanced up. “I need to look for something tomorrow. I can’t accompany you.”
“This little task doesn’t require your assistance.”
[What can’t I know about? Speak up! Can’t you even tell me, considering our relationship?]
“Don’t cause any fatalities,” Shane added.
Layla tilted her head and teased, “What? Afraid someone might get hurt?”
Shane’s eyes narrowed into slits, his cold gaze fixating on Layla.
He was angry. This was the first time Layla had ever clearly sensed his temper.
It was brief, gone as quickly as it came. His tone grew detached. “This is being livestreamed. The Empire has laws against murder.”
With that, he turned to grab the lion pelt hanging on the fence.,
Last night, Layla had tanned a wolf pelt, and he’d watched her pick up some basics. Now, he wanted to try with the lion pelt.
Layla watched him, biting her lip, convinced Shane had indeed been angry. It couldn’t be just her imagination.
But why?
Is it because I wanted to confront Liam? Or is he concerned for Stella’s wellbeing?
She observed him for a moment before turning away.
Regardless of his mood, her decision wouldn’t change.
Shane’s anger wouldn’t alter anything either.
Resolving this, Layla sat down and began splitting bamboo.
