Chapter 307 Wine
Fintered
Stella stood holding two bottles of wine, which she then presented to Layla with a bright, polished smile.
“Since I didn’t bring much else, and the show officially starts tomorrow, I figured we’d enjoy these before the crew confiscates everything,” she explained.
Leaning closer to Layla’s spot, she added in a confidential tone, “Mom specifically reminded me to bring these, you know.”
One of Layla’s eyebrows arched slightly.
Well, well.
A classic case of a wolf in sheep’s clothing-no good could come from this sudden generosity.
A quick glance confirmed the wine was indeed the expensive sort.
Alcohol was a rare and valuable commodity these days.
Layla accepted the bottles with an equally charming smile, promptly passing them off to Shane with a meaningful look.
He understood the assignment: check for poison.
Without a word, he carried them inside the cabin.
Turning back to Stella, Layla kept her expression pleasant, but her words held an edge. “Since you’re here, you might as well stay. But keep your schemes to yourself. One wrong move, and you won’t like how this
ends.”
She made no effort to lower her voice, letting the words hang in the air for everyone around the fire to hear.
Stella’s face tightened, but she managed a strained smile. “Layla, I’ve really changed. All that before… it was because I was sick.”
Layla waved a dismissive hand. “Save it. If you’re looking for something to do, go tend the fire.”
She didn’t expect much from Stella.
Watching a fire burn down to coals was simple enough-surely even she couldn’t mess that up.
Layla pointed towards the crackling firepit.
Nodding eagerly, Stella scurried over.
Only then did Layla notice the two males trailing behind Stella.
She narrowed her eyes, studying them.
One was a liger beastkin; the other, a pit viper beastkin.
A pit viper? Shane’s species.

Fined
A faint, knowing smile touched Layla’s lips before she headed inside.
Shane had just finished examining samples from both bottles.
“They’re clean. And genuinely excellent vintages,” he said, turning to her.
A glimmer of anticipation shone in his eyes.
Apparently, Shane had a fondness for the drink.
The live chat, populated by some of his former students, confirmed it.
[Heh, Prof. Slater does love his wine. Once a student tried to gift him a bottle, and he refused so sternly in, public… only to hunt the kid down afterward to buy the whole case.]
[That’s adorable. I always thought he was super serious.]
[Oh, he is serious. But he also has a weak spot for good liquor. Never seen him drunk, though.]
[Think he’ll get tipsy tonight? I’m kinda hoping for it.]
Reading the scroll of comments, Laylà arched a brow and gave Shane an amused look. “So the esteemed Prof. Slater enjoys a tipple.”
A faint blush colored his cheeks. “It’s… merely an occasional indulgence, Research requires a clear mind, but everyone needs to unwind.”
His overly earnest explanation made Layla chuckle.
She reached out and gently pinched the tip of his nose. “I enjoy a drink myself. We’ll have plenty tonight.”
The two bottles Stella brought were massive, nearly half a person’s height.
Even with the whole group, it would take a while to finish them.
Layla licked her lips, picked up the small glass Shane had poured for testing, and took a sip.
The flavor was rich and complex, burning smoothly down her throat-definitely top-shelf.
She could guess Ciara’s motive.
Stella’s social standing was in the gutter; most people avoided her like the plague.
These bottles were likely a peace offering, a tool to help her rebuild some connections.
A cold glint flickered in Layla’s eyes.
The other guests began arriving.
Though Layla had asked via the live chat for people to come empty-handed, ready to just eat and drink, everyone brought a little something.
