Chapter 33 You Know I’m a Softie

Liam dodged to the side and grabbed Layla’s ankle.

She instantly shifted into her beast form, slipping from his grasp and slapping him across the face with her wing.

[Oh snap!]

George, who had been feeling a bit nervous on his way over, suddenly felt relieved seeing how Liam was treated.

So she hits Liam in the face too.

That made him feel a lot better.

Liam already knew Layla could shift between forms fast, but he hadn’t expected her reactions to be that sharp.

Even seasoned veterans from the front lines rarely had reflexes as quick as Layla’s.

Her fighting style and techniques weren’t just on par with a veteran’s; they were even better.

Liam took two steps back, avoiding Layla’s next move, and looked at her with new interest. “I knew I wasn’t wrong about you.”

Seeing him back off, Layla stopped her attack.

“With skills like that, you won’t be killing me,” Liam said with a teasing smile.

Layla raised an eyebrow and ignored him. She looked past him at George standing behind him. Her expression wasn’t any friendlier than it had been with Liam. “What are you doing here?”

“Looking for you,” George said, holding up the plate of raw fish he’d been carrying. “Want some?”

Pink spoonbills ate fish, but Layla, maybe because of her near-drowning earlier, had been avoiding the ocean to hunt. She’d only been catching freshwater fish.

George was sure Layla would want to try his catch.

Layla’s eyes did light up, and she took a step toward him.

No one who’d lived through the apocalypse could refuse food right in front of them.

“Layla.”

Shane’s call stopped her.

She turned to see him standing by the busted chicken coop, looking totally wronged. “Liam broke the pen. Our chickens got out,” he said.

Layla immediately forgot about the raw fish. She spun around and took off after the fleeing poultry. “Damn you, Liam!”

Liam stared after her.

Did I even hit it in that direction?

[Framed!]

[Does anyone get Liam? He was set up by the snake!]

[I’m telling you, how high can the moral standards of someone who builds mechs really be?]

Left behind with his now-ignored raw fish, George walked up and shot him a nasty glare. “Why’d you have to mess with her chicken coop?”

Liam gave him a flat look.

Is there no justice?

“What are you doing here?” Liam asked.

“Stella said she wanted to give me back to Layla,” George explained with a sigh. “She cried and begged me not to make things hard for her. You know I’m a softie.”

Liam looked at him with deep suspicion.

George? A softie?

Does he have any self-awareness?

“So you came to find Layla?” Liam pressed.

“Yep.” George nodded.

“With food?” Liam’s eyes fell on the plate.

George nodded again. “A male who can’t please his mate is bad enough. He shouldn’t make her worry about food too, right?” He then looked over at Shane. “Isn’t that right, Prof. Slater?”

After Layla left, Shane had settled back into his chair and picked up his clay plate of jerky, pretending not to hear the challenge in George’s words. “You guys want some? Jerky Layla made just for me.”

Of course, he might genuinely not have caught the dig. But who knew?

Liam watched him.

Is that an actual invitation?

George hadn’t expected that even the usually straightforward Shane would learn to be slick after hanging around Layla.

“Sure, I’ll try some,” George said, making himself comfortable. He walked into the yard, sat at the table, put his raw fish down, and reached for Shane’s jerky without any shame.

Shane pulled the plate back. “Layla said she made this just for me. Didn’t Stella get you guys anything to eat?”

He glanced at the raw fish, his expression turning slightly disdainful. “She just lets you eat it raw? But Layla says raw meat has lots of parasites. It’s not good for you.”

George stared at him.

When did this guy turn into such a bitch?

Before George could figure it out, Shane suddenly placed the piece of jerky in his hand and stood up, walking toward the entrance.

He took the squawking chicken from Layla. “I’ll hold it. You go fix the coop.”

He shot a glance at Liam, who still lingered outside the yard. “He went too far this time, but since he brought us game before, we can let it slide.”

Liam’s eye twitched.
