Chapter 337 They Really Were After the Starcore Ore

Layla’s eyes flew open, and she kicked upward.

“Layla, it’s me!” Oliver’s voice came out in a panic.

She pulled her leg back just in time. She stared at him, wide-eyed. “How did you find me?” she asked.

Oliver clutched his chest and stepped back, still shaken. Taking a full-force kick from Layla would not have been fun.

“I went out looking for you and ran into those beetles from before. They signaled that they’d seen someone grab you, so I got here as fast as I could,” he said.

Layla looked at him, surprised. “You can talk to animals?” she asked.

Oliver’s face flushed a little, and he scratched his head. “I always thought it was kind of embarrassing, so I never told anyone.”

But things had gotten urgent, and Layla was asking directly. He didn’t want her thinking he was some creepy stalker, so he came clean.

It was something he’d been born with. He could communicate with any animal.

Layla looked at his red face and smiled. She could understand why he’d kept it hidden.

She thought for a moment, then asked, “When you were coming here, did you see anyone you didn’t recognize?”

Oliver shook his head immediately. “I watched the place for a while before I came in. I wanted to make sure they weren’t still hanging around.”

He stepped forward and started untying the ropes around her wrists.

Layla flexed her wrists. A cold look settled in her eyes. “Someone sent those men to grab me. One of them is a spirit serpent beastkin.”

Oliver’s expression flickered with shock. Spirit serpent beastkin hadn’t been seen in public for a long time.

They were the ones who started the interstellar pirates in the first place. Nearly their entire clan had been involved, and when the crackdown came, nearly all of them were wiped out.

Hearing that name again made Oliver’s gaze darken.

What the hell are they after?

Layla kept her voice low. “They’re probably here for the Starcore Ore.”

“This place isn’t safe. Let me get you back first. We’ll figure out a plan with Carson and the others.” Oliver didn’t try to play hero this time.

He grabbed Layla’s hand to lead her out, but they’d barely taken a few steps when they heard footsteps.

Shit. They’re coming back!

Layla pressed down on Oliver’s arm before he could ready himself for a fight and shook her head. The two of them slipped into a crevice in the rock wall.

The men walked in. They saw Layla was gone, but there wasn’t much surprise on their faces.

One of them just snorted, “Her males move fast.”
