Chapter 339 Found Something Near Your Cabin
George sniffled. That was when he spotted Oliver standing behind Layla, and his eyes narrowed. “What are you doing here?” he asked.
Oliver flashed a smug grin. “Right where I should be. If I hadn’t shown up, Layla wouldn’t have gotten out.”
George ground his teeth, jealousy flaring in his chest.
That bastard. He knew Layla was in trouble and didn’t even tell us.
Carson and Shane had noticed Layla was gone way too long. They’d gotten worried and headed out to search. When Emily told them Layla had stopped by earlier, it hit them that something was really wrong.
And the whole time, Oliver had snuck off all by himself to find her.
George narrowed his eyes. “Were you following her? How else would you know where she was?”
Oliver huffed, “Don’t blame me just because you’re useless.”
Layla gave them both a tired look, pushed George aside, and walked over to Shane, Carson, and Liam.
“Those two are interstellar pirates. They said their boss is coming soon, and they’re after the Starcore Ore,” she said.
All three of their faces went hard. Liam especially. He’d crossed paths with the interstellar pirates before. He knew exactly how vicious they could get.
“Something was off about them too,” Layla added, turning to Shane.
Shane frowned and stepped closer to the spirit serpent beastkin, studying him. “You’re right. It looks like they’ve been dosed with something. A banned substance,” he said.
Layla’s brow furrowed.
Banned substances? I haven’t heard of anything like that here. They had them in the apocalypse, though.
Even then, anything that could throw a creature or a person into a berserker rage was strictly off-limits. She hadn’t expected to run into it here.
Shane drew blood samples from both of them, stowed them carefully, and planned to run a full analysis back at the cabin.
Footsteps sounded again. Everyone tensed, hands going to their weapons, on guard for more pirates.
The bushes rustled. Liam and Carson stepped to the front, weapons ready. Then the leaves parted, and a face with sharp, steady features emerged.
