Leonard clenched his fists, the urge to run out warring with necessity He gave a terse nod. “Fine. Let’s go.”
They pushed out the door, Ciara muttering to a reluctant Stella, “Keep up. Don’t draw attention.”
Outside, Nick’s group had already ducked into hiding.
With so many people converging, continuing to shout would have been suicidal.
Then Leonard’s group emerged.
Julian, spotting nothing, pointed decisively in a random direction. “They went that way!”
The crowd surged after his gesture.
Julian shot Leonard a look and joined the pursuit.
Leonard hung back, scanning the shadows. “Roger, they’re distracted. Come with me, quick!” he whispered urgently.
From a distance, Layla watched, a silent, satisfied smile playing on her lips.
She wasn’t about to let their reunion happen so easily.
A subtle nod to George was all it took.
George immediately bellowed, “Over here! They’re right here!”
Roger and Leonard, on the verge of embracing, froze.
Ciara, stepping forward, played her part perfectly. “You dare show yourselves here? Guards!”
Security personnel closed in.
Desperation flashed in Leonard’s eyes as he hissed toward Roger’s hiding spot, “Go! Run! They won’t catch you! Now!”
Liam and Oliver were already advancing.
Seeing no other choice, Roger turned and fled with Nick and Gavin into the deeper darkness.
“After them!” Ciara commanded, maintaining the charade.
As the commotion of the chase swallowed everyone’s attention, Layla slipped away, doubling back swiftly to Stella’s now-empty mud hut.
The door, left ajar, yielded easily to her push.
Inside, a cloying, chemically sweet odor hit her senses.
She wrinkled her nose and began her search.

The hut, still unfinished, had only a bedroom and a small storage nook.
A quick check of the bedroom-under the bed, in the wardrobe-yielded nothing.
Stella wouldn’t keep something so incriminating in plain sight.
Layla moved to the storage area.
Among the clutter of supplies and food, a small metal box lay half-buried in a corner.
Layla moved to the storage area. Among the clutter of supplies and food, a small metal box lay half-buried in a corner.
Her eyes lit up, and she strode forward briskly.
She cleared away the clutter and lifted the lid.
Inside, neatly arranged, were over a dozen vials filled with a pale violet liquid. It was the berserker fury serum, identical to the counterfeits Shane had made.
Layla picked one up, the pungent scent confirming Shane’s ‘description.
Without hesitation, she pulled the counterfeit vials from her pocket and began switching them out, careful to replace each precisely as she found it.
Once the exchange was done, she slipped the real serum into her pocket. She then covered the box with clutter and smoothed everything back into place.
With that, she swiftly walked out of the storage room and headed toward the exit.
She was nearly at the door when it swung open.
Stella and Ciara walked in.
“Just had to make a show of it. No one will suspect us now.”
‘Mom, you’re always so-” Stella’s words died in her throat.
Her eyes locked on Layla.
Ciara saw her too.
Their faces hardened, cold suspicion flooding their features.
