George closed his eyes and pressed his palms together. Pale-blue water light swirled all around him. He opened his eyes and slammed both hands against the ground.

Thick mist billowed outward in an instant. It swallowed the cabin and spread for miles, wrapping everything in hazy fog.

The assassins, who had been firing relentlessly, lost their sight. Their shots turned wild and unfocused.

Layla drew her energy bow tight and gathered power at her fingertips.

She locked onto a shadow in the fog and released the string. The glowing arrow sliced through mist and buried itself deep in one assassin’s shoulder.

He screamed and crumpled to the ground.

A faint smile tugged at Layla’s lips.

Shane beside her let out a short cheer. “Nice shot, Layla!”

Down in the basement, Carson gripped his axe tight, watching the entrance with full vigilance.

His shoulder wound throbbed from tension, yet he dared not let his guard slip for even a second.

Explosions and clashing weapons echoed down from above. Urgency burned inside him.

His alpha’s instinct screamed for him to rush upstairs and fight alongside his friends, but his orders were o hold this position.

Soft footsteps echoed. The sound was nearly silent, yet it carried clearly through the quiet basement.

Carson’s eyes sharpened. He lifted his axe in front of his body, his tone cold. “Who’s there? Show yourself!”

The mystery man materialized like a ghost in the corner doorway. Cold light glinted off his long sword, its surface reflecting his sharp-featured face.

He looked straight at Carson and offered a smirk.

Carson’s eyes widened. He finally recognized who his opponent was. “Darren Cruse. The traitor of the Royal Guard. I never thought you were still alive.”

He could not believe this stranger was Darren-the elite Royal Guard warrior who had nearly slain the royal family’s heir before vanishing without a trace years ago.

Darren chuckled and tossed his cloak aside, revealing his full face.

The distinct silver scar across his left forehead, paired with his menacing glare, sent a chill through the air.

“You still remember me.” His voice dripped with icy scorn and bitter resentment. “The royal family framed me all those years ago. Branded me a traitor and forced me into exile. Now my time for revenge has

come.”

Carson stepped backward. “That whole affair had nothing to do with me. If you want vengeance, go after the royal family.”

Darren let out a bitter huff. “Patience. Once I take you down, I will kill Prince Oliver first. Then I will carry his head to the royal family and finish my revenge.”

With those words, he blurred forward, charging Carson like a phantom.

Up on the ground, Layla and the rest had no idea Darren had sneaked into the basement.

Their battle grew more brutal. Ciara’s laser cannon struck the energy barrier once again, and the shield began to crack apart.

Several assassins slipped through before the barrier could fully sell, rushing straight toward the cabin’s

nterior.

Shane raised his energy cannon and fired into the oncoming crowd, urgency in his voice. “Hold the doorway! Don’t let them get inside.”

The first wave of intruders dropped where they stood.

Yet their numbers were overwhelming. Even with Oliver straining every ounce of power to repair the >arrier, more than a dozen assassins forced their way through.

Through the fog, Layla loosed an arrow that pierced one assassin’s wrist.

His laser rifle clattered to the ground, and he cried out in agony.

Layla turned toward Oliver. “Stop repairing the barrier for now. Use Starcore Essence to lay traps and buy is time. We need Scarlett to restore communications with the backup signal units.”

Understood.” Oliver got to work right away. He crouched and buried fragments of Starcore Essence in the loor, channeling energy to activate them.

Golden streaks of light flashed across the ground, then vanished beneath the surface.

Several assassins rushing forward triggered the traps.

The Starcore Essence fragments detonated like small-scale bombs the moment they stepped on them.

The blast hurled the men backward. They slammed against the barrier, bleeding heavily, unable to push

themselves back to their feet.
