Chapter 453 It Could Capture Ciara’s Voice

When they got down to the basement, Darren was already gone.

A sharp jolt ran through Layla. She traded a quick look with Scarlett, and both of them understood exactly what had happened.

The same force that had taken Ciara earlier must have gotten Darren, too.

Whoever was behind this could pull off something like that right under everyone’s noses-they were no ordinary threat.

Layla and Scarlett walked back out of the basement with nothing to show for their search.

Carson frowned when he saw them, though he did not look all that surprised. “Layla, whoever that is,holds a great deal of power.”

It sounded as if Carson already knew who it was.

Before he could say another word, Layla spotted a dropped comm unit at her feet. It clearly did not belong to anyone from the production crew.

She hit the answer button right away and stayed silent.

An old, irritated voice crackled over the line. “Darren, do you have the energy field? The royal family is all set to fire the weapon. We’re just waiting for you to bring the energy field back. Do not mess this up.”

Layla tapped the record button, cleared her throat, and spoke into the comm. “We know about your scheme. You will never get your hands on the energy field.”

Silence hung on the other end for a beat.

Then furious shouting exploded through the speaker. “Layla! So it’s you. You dare ruin our plan? I will not let you get away with this. You are going to pay dearly.”

The call cut off immediately after that.

Layla turned toward the group standing around them, her expression heavy. “The royal family really is mixed up in all of this.”

Every pair of eyes shifted over to Oliver, and mixed emotions played across everyone’s faces

Oliver stared at the ground for a long moment, then shrugged his shoulders. It does not matter. They never cared for me anyway. I have always been the one they throw under the bus.”

He was not holding back out of some sense of loyalty to the royal family.

No matter how you looked at it, the things the royal family had done were unforgivable.

He clapped Layla gently on the shoulder. “Layla, don’t hold back on my account. Do what you have to do.”

A soft smile tugged at Layla’s lips.when she heard that, and she pulled Oliver into a firm hug.

Wrapped in her embrace, Oliver breathed in her scent. A strange sense of belonging settled over him.

Oliver rolled his eyes at George’s comment.

Everyone can see right through George-he’s just jealous.

Oliver huffed in annoyance, yet he knew George had a point.

He stepped back from Layla. Soft affection lingered in his eyes, and his gaze toward her was full of resolve. “Layla, you can count on me. No matter what schemes the royal family cooks up, I’m on your side.”

Layla gave a quiet laugh and nodded. She reached out and ruffled George’s hair. “Quit getting jealous over nothing.”

After that, she walked over to Scarlett.

Scarlett grinned and arched an eyebrow at her. “Did you end up using what I gave you?”

Layla nodded and pulled a tiny chip free from her clothing.

No one else knew about this item.

Back when Scarlett had handed over the weapons, she had also given Layla a recording device.

They had expected their enemies might jam signals. If that happened, Vanguard would never be able to broadcast proof that Ciara had brought armed men onto the site.

That was why Scarlett had given Layla this chip-equipped recorder. At the very least, it could capture Ciara’s voice.
