Layla tapped her fingertips lightly against the tabletop. The whole room fell quiet.

She said, “This is only speculation, and we cannot say for certain. But if they get their hands on the Starcore Essence mines and the energy field, they will absolutely have everything they need to finish developing cross-galaxy weapons.”

Carson leaned against the wall. His pain had eased a little, yet his face remained pale.

Still, his tone stayed steady and calm. “Darren was framed years ago for plotting to kill the crown prince and branded a traitor. There has to be more behind why he would work with the royal family now.”

Yates glanced from one person to the next and spoke in a nervous, timid voice. “Were the people who rescued Ciara and Darren working for the royal family?”

He had not joined in the fighting himself, but he had felt firsthand just how overwhelming that rescuer’s power really was.

The second that figure showed up, Yates had wanted to vanish right into the ground.

Mention of that mysterious man made Layla’s expression turn grave.

She said, “We do not know his identity for sure, but he is definitely closely tied to the royal family. With that level of power, the odds are high he is one of their people.”

Right then, Scarlett came rushing over in a terrible state. “We just got word from interstellar space. The royal family put out an official statement ahead of time. They claim we stole Planet A13’s energy for ourselves and attacked their guards for no reason. They are demanding we hand over the energy field and turn Layla and the rest of us over to them for punishment.”

Liam’s anger flared the second he heard that news. He balled his hands into tight fists. “This is a total distortion of the truth. They sent assassins after us and tried to seize the energy field, and now they are twisting everything around to blame us.”

Oliver’s features darkened, and cold light flashed across his eyes. “That is how the royal family has always operated. They will do anything to get what they want.”

He had lived inside the royal court, so he knew exactly how low they would stoop.

Shane took the comm right away. He hooked it up to his portable scanning device, and a blinking red dot popped up on the screen.

His voice turned heavy. “The tracker places Ciara and Darren in the northern wastelands of Planet A13. It completely uninhabited. The terrain is rough, full of mutated creatures, and signal strength/there is very weak, which will make tracking hard.”

Carson tried to push himself to his feet, yet Layla pressed him gently back down. “Your injuries are too serious. You cannot come. Liam, Oliver, you two are coming with me.”

She then turned to George. “You stay behind and defend the cabins. Shane, look after Carson and Yates. Alert us immediately if the tracker signal shifts in any unusual way.”

Next, she walked over to Scarlett and patted her shoulder. “Ms. Moore, keep pressing the Cosmic Confederacy. Submit all the proof we have and buy us as much time as you possibly can.”

Scarlett nodded. “Count on me.”
