Layla turned her head and gave the others a warning. “We need to stay sharp. We don’t know if they have men lying in wait around here, and the mutated creatures are extremely aggressive.”

She scanned every corner with watchful eyes and kept her steps almost silent.

Liam nodded, hurried forward, and stepped in front of Layla to scout the path ahead.

Oliver let loose a faint wisp of Starcore Essence energy. He kept his senses wide-open for any disturbance. ready to jump in and shield Layla the second something went wrong.

The three of them trekked across the wasteland for roughly an hour. The tracker’s red dot grew sharper, coming from inside a mine cave not far ahead.

Dim darkness filled the cave. Several figures were barely visible within the shadows.

Ciara sat on the ground. Her shoulder wound had gotten basic bandaging, yet her skin stayed deathly pale.

Darren leaned against a nearby rock with his eyes shut. Blood still seeped through his shoulder injury. His breathing came shallow, and his gaze looked empty and dull.

The drug Shane had injected had not fully worn off yet.

A robed mystery man stood beside them.

His robe looked nothing like the one Darren had worn. The fabric was far finer, covered all over with tightly packed carved runes.

Something caught the man’s attention. He spun around and locked eyes with Layla’s steady stare. “I never expected you people would track us down this far.”

The man in robes spoke, his voice deep and aged-an exact match for the voice they had heard over the comm unit. “Hand over the energy field if you know what’s good for you. I might spare your lives.”

Layla gripped her bow tight and stepped into the cave opening. Liam and Oliver pressed close on either side of her, forming a defensive triangular formation.

Layla lifted one eyebrow as she faced him. “We already know the royal family’s scheme. You will get the energy field only over our dead bodies.”

The robed man let out a short dry laugh. He slowly pulled off his hood, revealing an elderly face criss-crossed with wrinkles, his eyes cold.

A long scar ran from behind his ear all the way down to the corner of his mouth. “I have to admit, you’ve got

backbone.”

He studied Layla, his tone thick with mockery. “I’m Edgar Reynolds, an elder of the royal family. I oversee all their secret operations. Layla, I suggest you be reasonable. The energy field was never yours to keep. Hand it to the royal family, and this will go better for everyone.”

Oliver stepped forward, his voice rising with frustration. “The royal family stumbled onto the energy field

pure accident. Planet A13 is unclaimed territory, and the production crew holds official usage rights. How can you say it does not belong to us?”

He stared hard at Edgar, holding back boiling anger. “The royal family sacrifices innocent lives just to build these deadly weapons. You even work alongside interstellar pirates. What right do you have to make these demands?”

Layla felt genuine surprise at Oliver’s words.

They had run into interstellar pirates before, yet they had never connected them to the royal family.

Oliver would not make that claim unless he had uncovered solid proof.

He balled his fists and glared at Edgar.

Edgar’s face darkened instantly, and killing intent flashed in his eyes. “Boy, you have no right to speak here. You would have died long ago if someone had not risked everything to protect you.”

Oliver froze completely. Arnold crossed his mind in that instant.

Edgar ignored Oliver and snapped his head toward Ciara. “What are you waiting for? Get the location of the energy field out of her.”

Ciara gritted her teeth and forced herself onto her feet.

She understood there was no turning back. Her only shot at survival lay in helping Edgar seize the energy field.

Ciara lifted a hand and signaled hidden assassins out of the deep shadows. She pulled a dagger and a syringe from inside her coat.

The liquid inside the syringe was refined Berserker Serum.

She snarled straight at Layla. “If it were not for you, I would never have ended up like this. Prepare to die.”

She jammed the Berserker Serum into her own body and charged straight for Layla.
