Chapter 460 Sharing This Space Alongside Them

soaked the dried meat in water to soften it, then sliced it into thin pieces.

After that, she took one surviving pot, cleaned it, and set it over the fire to boil water first.

Before long, George came back first carrying a bucket of water, with all kinds of lively fish in his hands

Among them were the snakehead fish everyone had praised for great flavor, plus several other still-wriggling species.

He set them down in front of Layla. “Layla, look. These fish are super fresh. I know you can turn them into something absolutely delicious.”

Layla glanced at the fish George had brought and nodded with a smile. “Perfect. Put the fish in the basin, and I’ll get to them later. Set the water bucket over there. Good work.”

“It’s nothing.” George shook his head quickly with a grin, placed the fish in the basin, and grabbed the bucket again. “I’m going for more water, just in case we run short.”

Layla smiled and nodded. Watching his reckless energy, she added a cautious reminder. “Just stay safe.”

Her eyes held soft fondness as she watched George walk away.

Next came Oliver. His wicker kindling basket was piled high, the dry sticks rising well above its rim.

No one would have guessed that Prince Oliver, once of noble rank, would willingly tend to such plain

chores.

Layla hurried over and took the heavy basket off his shoulders. “You’ve worked hard. Go rest for a bit.”

Oliver’s eyes drifted over. He spotted Shane repairing kitchen tools and stepped toward him. “Need some help?”

Shane did not look up from his work. “I’ve got this small job covered. Go help Layla instead. She will have her hands full cooking alone.”

Oliver turned back toward Layla. She pointed toward the unwashed vegetables sitting nearby. “Then wash all these greens, and drain the water off that soaked meat.”

Oliver rolled up his sleeves at once and nodded seriously. “Got it.”

Warmth spread through Layla as she watched him work.

Though Oliver usually came off cool and reserved, he was thoughtful and gentle, never putting on princely

airs.

Shortly afterward, Liam returned. He held two plump hares in one hand, slung a half-grown young deer over his shoulder, and carried fresh foraged vegetables.

Tiredness showed on his face, yet he still wore a smile. “Layla, brought everything back. What would you like me to do with it?”

Dirt and grass bits clung to Liam, and sweat beaded on his forehead. Layla’s heart twinged. She steppeДt forward, pulled out a tissue, and wiped the sweat from his brow.

She said, “Good work. Go rest and drink some water.”

Liam caught Layla’s unique scent. His heartbeat picked up speed.

He stared at her face so close to his own, felt the soft touch of her fingertips, and a faint flush colored his cheeks.

Liam scratched the back of his neck, looking uneasy. “It’s no trouble. Hunting is what I’m good at.”

Seeing this rare shy side of Liam, Layla could not hold back a quiet laugh and handed him the tissue. “Wipe yourself off, you’ve got dirt on your face. I’ll handle the hares.”

Liam nodded and took the tissue, yet his gaze stayed fixed on Layla, full of soft amusement.

Carson sat in the yard watching the busy group, filled with a steady, warm feeling deep inside.

Simply seeing Layla occupied and happy was enough to make him content.

Carson understood exactly how he felt about her.

He also knew he could never have Layla all to himself.

Still, every person around her truly cared for her, and he was fine sharing this space alongside them.

Layla skillfully skinned the hares and set them to soak in salt water. She made a mental note that the hides could be repurposed later.

She cleaned the hare meat, discarded inedible organs and kept the usable parts, chopped the meat into chunks, and placed them in a bowl to marinate with seasonings.

She planned to make herb-roasted hare.

Next, she worked on the fish George had caught. She cleaned then, cut them into sections on a plate, intending to cook a rich-fragrant spicy fish stew.

Finally, she finished prepping all the vegetables.

For the deer, she cut off its four legs to simmer in clear broth.

The rest of the meat would go over charcoal for grilling.
