A campfire had been lit out in the yard. Marinated venison roasted over the flames, and hot fat crackled, releasing a rich, savory smell.

Liam spotted Layla walking toward him and broke into a warm smile. “You worked so hard making all this food alone-why didn’t you call us over to help?”

Layla waved one hand dismissively. “Anyone who actually knows how to cook understands this job is best done alone. Extra people hovering nearby only get in the way.”

George stared at the spread laid across the table: herb-roasted hare, spicy fish stew, braised venison shank, green salad, savory tomato omelet, and many other dishes. His mouth watered uncontrollably.

Layla clapped her hands, and everyone turned their eyes toward her. “Help yourselves today. The meal is nothing fancy. Once we finish eating, our dating show will pick back up, and we can leave all our old troubles behind us.”

Everyone understood what she meant. They lifted their drinking cups together. “Here’s to restarting our dating show. Cheers.”

“Cheers.”

Livestream viewers grew excited watching the lively scene, and comments flooded the feed.

[It feels like we’ve made it through so much chaos, and finally the dating show is back to normal.]

[All those recent events were thrilling, but I didn’t sign up for a military broadcast. It feels so nice seeing everyone sit and share a warm meal together.]

[Exactly. All that excitement hurt every single one of us deep down. Quiet, simple moments like this are the best.]

Layla’s cooking was well-loved by the whole group. Everyone ate heartily, and after two long, tiring days, they ate far more food than usual.

Layla had planned ahead for this, and she had prepared much Jarger portions than normal.

Even so, nearly double their usual amount of food was completely finished.

Most people left the table rubbing their full stomachs.

Only a small handful remained in the yard-Emily and her mates.

A slow smile spread across Layla’s lips. “Why haven’t you headed off yet?”

Emily wiped down the table while she spoke, “You fed us such a wonderful meal. The least we can do is stay and help clean everything up.”

She winked playfully at Layla.

The two women shared a quiet, knowing laugh.

By the time they finished cleaning, the afternoon was well underway.

Layla stretched her arms above her head and yawned as she walked toward the cabin. “I’ve worn myself out lately. I’m going to take a long nap. Nobody come in and disturb me. I’ll figure out where I’m sleeping tonight on my own.”

The five remaining males stood outside and exchanged confused glances.

Liam’s mouth curved into a sly grin. “All of us carry serious injuries. It won’t work for us all to sleep in one room. George and Oliver, you two will share quarters.”

It was a tricky arrangement-pairing up the two males who could barely stand each other.

Just as everyone expected, both of them cried out in protest, “No way!”

Their complaints did no good.

George and Oliver were assigned to sleep together anyway.

Once they settled in for the night, they sat very far apart from one another. A wide gap separated them.

Bright sunlight filled the sky the next morning, and Layla had slept very well.

She stepped outside, yawning. Seeing that everyone else was still asleep, she decided to fix breakfast.

While she cooked, her mind wandered.

Yesterday’s feast had used up a large part of their food supplies. They needed to head out hunting soon, and she tried to think of a good place to find fresh game.

Layla set oatmeal on the stove to boil. She chopped up vegetables and set them aside to soak in salt water.

Next, she deep-fried the tiny fish George had brought back the day before, then poured thick sauce over the top.

She finished by making a simple batch of spicy pepper scrambled eggs.
