Chapter 467 Go Check on Jacob

Shane locked himself inside his room to run tests.

By the time dinner was nearly ready and everyone had returned, Shane stepped out of the

room.

He wore a serious look on his face. “Its saliva carries an unknown virus-and it is extremely contagious.”

Shane’s words fell over the group. No one spoke, and they glanced back and forth at one another.

Layla said, “If this virus spreads so easily, why is only the bear infected so far? All the other animals seem perfectly fine.”

Shane frowned. “The bear was infected fairly recently. The pathogen is still spreading slowly through its body.”

Layla sank into thought. “There has to be some source that brought the virus here.”

All of them realized the same thing at almost the exact same moment. “Could Ciara have brought it over last time?” they said in unison.

“If Ciara is behind this,” Layla said, “they must have more plans waiting for us.”

Her frown deepened, and cold sharpness crossed her features. “They will not stop until they get rid of us.”

Liam let out a sharp, bitter huff. He clenched both of his fists and set them hard on the table, his expression turning deadly serious. “We would have been in huge trouble later on if Layla had never found that bear.”

That much was true. Layla had spotted the bear while she was planning to clear new farmland, and she had gotten everyone ready ahead of time.

Otherwise, the bear’s sudden attack could have hurt Layla badly.

Any person wounded by this contagious animal would catch the virus right away.

Layla turned toward Shane. “Do you have a vaccine or an antidote?”

“I have never encountered this contagious virus before.” Shane shook his head gently. “Developing a vaccine will take a very long time.”

Their only remaining choice was to put the bear down.

Layla breathed out a quiet, heavy sigh.

She had originally hoped the bear would simply leave on its own. She never wanted to take its life.

Carson noticed the sadness in Layla’s heart.

He gave her shoulder a soft, reassuring pat. “None of this is your fault. Ciara and her group are the ones to blame.”

Layla lifted her eyes and gave him a small smile. “I know. It just frustrates me that Ciara and her people are still walking free.”

“People who keep doing wrong will eventually face their own consequences,” Carson said firmly. “They will pay for this, and we are not going to let them get away with it.”

He was always the one who cared most about justice.

Right now, their group was not strong enough to fight Ciara directly, so they had chosen to hold back for the time being.

That did not mean Carson intended to drop the matter.

After hearing Carson’s words, Layla felt her feelings of hopelessness and gloom fade completely.

“Let’s eat first,” she said. “I will send word to Scarlett. She needs to keep a close watch on the bear and tell everyone else not to go near it.”

They had barely started their meal when Emily showed up.

She looked over at Layla and the rest of the group with a grin. “Perfect timing. I hope you do not mind if I join you for dinner.”

Layla smiled and gestured for her to sit down. “Come and eat. Where are Jacob and the others?”

“Jacob has a fever. Rowan is staying back at their place to look after him,” Emily answered.

Layla tilted her head in surprise. “I never expected someone as strong as Jacob to get sick.”

Emily shook her head with a quiet laugh. “Lots of people in the camp have fallen ill these past couple of days.”

Layla’s smile froze on her face.

She suddenly remembered Jacob was not the only sick person. Yvette had already come to

A terrible thought crossed Layla’s mind. She set down her fork at once and looked straight at Shane.
