“Still, we need to cut off the source of this problem-even a small-scale outbreak would cause us huge trouble,” Shane said, looking over at Layla.

Layla nodded firmly in agreement.

The two of them found Scarlett right away and told her what had happened.

Scarlett’s eyebrows drew together in a slight frown. “Prof. Slater’s help will make this virus easy to handle, but one thing has me curious.”

Layla and Shane both stared at Scarlett, waiting for her to keep talking.

Scarlett’s tone grew far more serious. “The river you mentioned earlier was never visited by Ciara’s group. Their old travel route headed in the exact opposite direction.”

The second Scarlett finished speaking, Layla and Shane understood what she meant.

They glanced at each other, shock showing clearly in their eyes.

This could only mean one thing. Someone from within the show had unleashed the virus upon the local wildlife.

“This virus could never have formed naturally. It was man-made,” Shane stated.

A person had deliberately poisoned the area, and that culprit was hiding somewhere among the

contestants.

The situation was like a venomous snake lurking in the shadows, ready to strike and take their lives at any moment.

The snake was aware of their weaknesses, yet they had no idea where it was.

Layla’s breathing grew shallow as she thought over the dangerous hidden threat.

Scarlett caught on to Layla’s plan the moment she heard those words.

Layla waved one hand gently back and forth. “Participation in this challenge will be 100% voluntary.”

Scarlett’s face lit up. “That’s it. The culprit will definitely volunteer, since they do not want to miss this chance. Less-capable contestants will stay away on their own. We can narrow our list of suspects and keep everyone else safe at the same time.”

She clapped Layla on the shoulder, her expression full of genuine admiration. “You are extremely smart.”

Layla smiled and gave a small, graceful bow.

“Now, how do we pull this off?” Scarlett scratched the back of her head.

Layla pointed toward the unsettled land she had been clearing. “We can use my work out there as our cover story.”

They could tell everyone that a wild beast was still roaming that stretch of empty land.

Contestants who believed they were strong enough could sign up to hunt it down in pairs.

Whoever took care of the beast would earn a jar of salt, a barrel of cooking oil, plus a share of future harvests from the new farmland from Layla.

That reward would tempt almost every single contestant.

The threat of wild animals would naturally filter out contestants with little combat skill.

Scarlett wanted to announce the task right away.

Word spread fast, and many contestants grew eager to join.

Emily let out a quiet, disappointed sigh. “I would sign up without a second thought if Jacob were not sick right now.”
