Chapter 471 Kept Walking Forward

Wilbur nodded with a soft, warm smile. “Getting so many supplies from you will save me all the hard-won work of hunting on my own. Besides, I have plenty of confidence in myself.”

Layla smiled and said nothing. She glanced over at the other contestants.

Nearly all of them were males. Only a small number of the female participants had brought their own male partners along.

Eight teams stood there in total, including Layla.

She locked eyes with Emily, then walked over to Scarlett. “We can start now.”

Scarlett told the show staff to bring out the drawing supplies they had prepared ahead of time.

She walked slowly in front of every single contestant.

Everyone picked up a plain white ball.

Once every person had drawn their ball, all of them lit up at the exact same moment.

Emily’s ball glowed purple, and Layla’s shined bright blue.

Layla looked down at her ball. By pure chance, Wilbur was the one placed on her team.

Wilbur caught sight of the blue ball in Layla’s hand. A shy smile spread across his face.

He stepped up to her and spoke quietly, “I will do my best not to hold you back.”

Layla waved one hand dismissively. “I know you are more than capable. Do not sell yourself short. The two of us might even take down that wild beast together.”

Wilbur’s smile grew wider.

He nodded happily, then his gaze drifted off toward someone in the crowd without him noticing.

Layla followed his line of sight and saw a female contestant whose beast form was an octopus.

From what Layla could remember, those two were not mates. She wondered why Wilbur’s eyes had automatically turned toward her.

She quietly stored away this strange detail in her mind and chose not to bring it up for the time being.

Wilbur glanced at the males standing behind Layla, who watched him with sharp, unblinking eyes. He swallowed hard. “Are they going to get upset about this?”

Layla turned her head to look at them. George and Oliver wore the most threatening expressions of all.

They looked ready to lunge at Wilbur at any second.

Layla raised an eyebrow at them and pointed a warning finger through the air.

George and Oliver reluctantly softened their stares. They exchanged a quick glance, and it was clear they were hatching some sort of plan.

Liam stepped over and rested one hand on each of their shoulders.

He gave them a gentle warning. “Stay out of trouble, you two. Layla has her own plan.”

George and Oliver grumbled under their breaths and lowered their heads, still unhappy with the situation.

The mission officially began.

Contestants headed out one after another toward the wild land near the Starcore Essence mine.

Layla deliberately slowed her pace. She kept one eye on Wilbur as they walked, and stayed aware of the other teams nearby.

None of them knew each other well, so the walk stayed mostly silent.

Layla checked on Wilbur every now and then. Apart from keeping a careful watch over their surroundings, he showed no obvious odd behavior.

Wilbur struck up a cautious conversation as they moved forward. “You cleared this farmland so quickly. It would have taken me days just to break up the soil-about where did you spot that wild beast?”

Layla offered a faint smile. She stepped back to put some space between herself and Wilbur, then pointed toward a weedy hollow up ahead.

She said, “I cannot give you an exact location, but it is somewhere in that area. Vanguard captured a blurry silhouette on camera. The creature is some kind of large carnivore. You can walk behind me if you feel nervous.”

Wilbur stood up a little straighter and smiled, “I’m only a jerboa, but I’m not scared. Besides, I have you on my side. You defeated that black bear, after all.”

He lowered his head slightly, looking a little embarrassed.
