Chapter 478 Getting a Reward Tonight

Shane sat in front of the chalkboard, still studying the Starcore Ore. Everyone focused on their own tasks. and a calm, peaceful atmosphere filled the cabin.

When Layla and Carson walked back inside, George jumped right to his feet. “Layla, Carson! You’re finally home. I’m starving over here.”

A smile tugged at Layla’s lips as she watched him. “Go ahead and eat, then. Carson and I already finished our breakfast.”

George let out a dramatic groan and turned his head toward Oliver’s bedroom. “I knew they would eat without waiting. You made me wait around hungry all morning!”

Oliver opened his bedroom door and stuck his head out, a hint of disdain in his voice. “No one forced you to wait for them, even if they hadn’t eaten yet.”

He held out the object in his hand toward Layla—a finely polished, teardrop-shaped fragment of Starcore Essence.

Oliver said, “Put this around your neck, Layla. The energy from the Starcore Essence will keep you safe.”

Warmth welled up inside Layla’s heart as she looked at the delicate Starcore Essence Pendant.

She glanced around at everyone and nodded with a smile. “It makes me so happy to see all of you getting along this well.”

George, who had been ready to argue with Oliver, dropped the subject at once and quietly sat down to eat his breakfast.

Shane stepped over to her next. “The soil has been tilled, but weeds will still start growing soon. I created a weed-killing mixture that won’t harm our young sprouts, only the unwanted weeds. After breakfast, I’ll come with you to spread it across the field.”

Layla sat at the table and watched them chat about the garden while they ate.

Light-hearted teasing broke out between them every now and then, filling the room with warm, lively,

energy.

Once breakfast was over, the whole group headed out to the farmland. They split up their jobs clearly and worked with great efficiency.

Layla directed everyone, pointing out which sections needed extra water and where the weed treatment should go.

Liam and George pulled thick, overgrown weeds from the planting rows. Oliver used a small trowel to loosen the soil, so the young plant roots could breathe freely.

Carson cleared tiny weeds growing right next to each sprout, while Shane crouched down and took soil samples from every section of the garden.

The sun grew hotter. Sweat beaded on everyone’s foreheads, and dirt smudged their clothes.

Still, not a single person complained. They threw themselves into their work with energy and enthusiasm.

orge pulled weeds while stealing quick glances over at Layla every few minutes.

When she lifted her arm to wipe sweat from her face, he dropped the weeds he was holding and hurried over, holding out the water canteen. “You must be thirsty. Have some water.”

Layla smiled and reached for the container. Her hands were covered in dirt, so she leaned forward and drank straight from the bottle while George held it for her.

George’s face lit up with delight. He turned and went back to weeding, filled with motivation.

A flicker of jealousy stirred inside Oliver.

He walked over to Layla and gently tapped the Starcore Essence Pendant resting against her neck. “Layla try holding onto the pendant and channeling its energy. It will cool you right down.”

Layla followed his suggestion.

A cold sensation spread outward from the pendant. The heat that had been bothering her vanished instantly, and a refreshing chill wrapped around her body even under the blazing sun.

Oliver reached out and touched the pendant on her chest.

His fingers brushed lightly against her neck by accident. Layla gave a small, involuntary shiver.

George blew up the second he saw it. “Hey! Don’t take advantage of Layla.”

He pulled Oliver away and planted himself firmly in front of Layla, cheeks puffed out with anger.

Oliver rolled his eyes. “You think I’m just like you?”

They were seconds away from starting another fight. Layla quickly stepped between them and held up one hand. “Quit arguing. Can’t even hard work keep you two from bickering?”

Seeing that Layla was upset, both males fell silent. They glared at each other one last time, then returned to their chores.

George worked with extra, stubborn energy and pulled up huge handfuls of weeds. Layla could only shake her head, amused.

Shane finished taking all his notes and walked over to Layla, pushing his glasses up his nose.

He said, “I’ve checked all the soil and young plants. We shouldn’t have to worry about pest infestations out here. Regular watering and fertilizer will be enough.”

Layla patted Shane on the top of his head, her tone warm and full of praise: “We couldn’t have done this without you.”
